Uses
This medication is prescribed to alleviate the discomfort and pain caused by muscle sprains, strains, and spasms. It is most often used in combination with physical therapy, rest, and other treatments. This medication helps to alleviate muscle tightness, stiffness, cramping, and pain.
Administration
This medication comes in an oral and injectable form. Patients taking the oral form will take it one to three times daily as directed by their doctor. Those taking the injectable form will be shown how to inject it into a muscle or they will have it administered by a healthcare professional if they are having it injected into a vein. This medication should be injected into different areas each time it is used.
Contraindications
Patients with certain medical conditions should not use this medication. Those with heart problems should not use this medication. Other medical conditions that may not react well to this medication include muscle disease, high eye pressure, esophagus problems, intestinal/stomach blockage or ulcers, bladder problems, and an enlarged prostate.
Side Effects
Patients who are taking orphenadrine citrate may experience common or serious side effects. If serious side effects occur, they should contact a doctor immediately. Common side effects include drowsiness, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, lightheadedness, upset stomach, blurred vision, headache, and vision changes. The serious side effects include mood/mental changes, eye pain, shaking, trouble urinating, fainting, and pounding/fast heartbeat.
Drug Interactions
Certain medications may interact adversely with this medication. Over-the-counter cold and cough products may increase drowsiness. Other medications that may interact include antihistamines, psychiatric medications, anti-seizure medications, narcotic pain relievers, other muscle relaxers, anti-anxiety medications, and sleeping medications.
Risks and Warnings
Patients should avoid dangerous activities when using this medication because it can make them drowsy and dizzy. Patients should stand up slowly to avoid increased lightheadedness and dizziness. Pregnant women should only use if absolutely necessary and breastfeeding women should avoid this medication.
