The medication is classified as a calcium channel blocker. This allows the medication to dilate the blood vessels. This slows the heart, which allows the blood pressure to be reduced. As a result, it relieves the pain of angina .

Warnings

If you suffer from high blood pressure, you must take amlodipine besylate regularly in order for it to be fully effective. It may take many weeks for this medication to completely reduce blood pressure. This is not an actual cure for high blood pressure, but it does keep it under control if used properly and regularly.

Studies have not been conducted whether or not this medication affects pregnant women. It is important to tell a doctor immediately if you are pregnant, become pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant while using this medication. Norvasc can transmit through breast milk; therefore, women who are breastfeeding should be avoided taking this medication.

Side Effects

The known side effects of this medication include dizziness and fatigue. Flushing of the body and headaches are also common. Fluid retention and swelling of the body can also occur. Heart palpitations have also been reported with use of this medication.
