Traditional Deodorants

Let’s discuss something you probably put on every morning: deodorant. Deodorants and antiperspirants are a well-needed part of our everyday lives. These body odor blasters have been around for centuries and have evolved over time. Walking up and down the aisles at a local supermarket, you will see dozens of types of deodorants in all shapes, sizes and fragrances. They have everything from roll-ons to sprays!

Health Risks

One things that all of these products probably have in common is the fact that they contain aluminum, either aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium. For years, aluminum has thought to be harmful when used in cosmetic products. Several natural health groups have even been urging for oversight and mandates in the use of these products.

Aluminum, which makes up about 25 percent of deodorants and antiperspirants, is highly effective at fighting wetness. There are concerns however, that aluminum is hazardous to your health. Though not proven, some health experts believe high levels of aluminum may possibly be connected to breast cancer in women due to increased estrogen levels. Not to mention, some people may experience allergic reactions to aluminum when it comes in direct contact with their body.

Alternative Deodorants

The good news is that there are safe and healthy alternatives. Natural deodorants are easy to find, and they don’t contain aluminum chloroyhdrate or aluminum zirconium. In addition to those advantages, they are also easy on the wallet.

One type of natural unscented deodorant is a deodorant stone. These stones are smooth crystals of potassium aluminum sulfate, a naturally occurring form of aluminum salt, not a processed form. To use, simply wet the stone and use like a roll on deodorant. These stones are cheap, easy to use and can be found at a local health store.

Also, if you prefer to feel fresh and smell like it too, there are a wide variety of organic deodorants that are naturally scented. Trader Joe’s, Tom’s of Maine, Burt’s Bees and Dr. Hauschka all sell some type of natural deodorant. Many of the deodorants they sell contain natural herbs for scent, aloe, floral formulas and natural oils.

Instead of potentially risking your health with traditional deodorants, you can simply pick up an alternative deodorant at your local grocery or health store.
