What You Need

Before you get started you will need the Zune software and Windows Media Player installed on your computer. You can use both of these software applications for transferring music files to Zune. You can download Windows Media Player from the Microsoft website. You should have received the Zune software on a CD when you purchased your Zune.

Add Music to Zune from Windows Media Player

Connect the Zune player to your computer via the USB cable included with it. Plug one end of the cable into the Zune player and the other into a USB port on the front or back of the computer. The Windows AutoPlay dialog box opens when your computer detects the Zune device.

Click Add Files to the Device in the AutoPlay dialog box. Windows Media Player will automatically open. The icon for the Zune player shows on the left pane at the bottom.

Click the Sync tab from the navigation menu in the upper right corner of the screen. The Sync play list panel opens in the right pane. It shows the amount of space available on the Zune player below the device icon.

Select the songs you want to transfer to your Zune device. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click each song you want to sync. When you have selected all of the music you want to transfer, drag them to the Sync pane on the right side of the window.

Click Start Sync at the bottom of the list of music files. The music you selected will transfer to the middle of the screen of Windows Media Player. A progress bar shows at the bottom of the screen in red showing you the estimated time the sync process will take. When it is completed, Windows Media Player notifies you in the middle of the screen. When it is finished, you can disconnect the Zune device from your computer.

Manually Sync Music to Zune Player

Connect the Zune player to your computer via the USB cable included with it. Plug one end of the cable into the Zune player and the other into a USB port on the front or back of the computer. The Windows AutoPlay dialog box opens when your computer detects the Zune device. You do not need to select an option from this dialog box.

Open the Zune software installed on your computer. Click Collection and find the music you want to transfer to the Zune, such as a song or album. Drag and drop the music to the Device icon in the lower-left corner of the screen. It will automatically sync and the music will transfer to the Zune device.

Transfer CD to Zune Player

Open the Zune software installed on your computer. Connect your Zune to your computer via the USB cable included with it.

Insert the CD with the music files you want to transfer to the Zune device into your computer’s CD/DVD drive. Click the CD icon that appears after you insert the CD.
