What are DNA Extraction Techniques?

There are several fundamental steps involved in extracting DNA from cells.

  1. Cells have to be isolated
  1. DNA has to be isolated and purified so cells are lysed (burst open) to gain access to the nuclear DNA. This can be achieved by a number of methods including grinding or sonication (ultrasound). Detergent may be used to remove lipid membranes. Protease enzymes are used to strip proteins away from the DNA.
