Nokia X6 vs Nokia X3: Comparison

The Nokia X Series is the successor to the Xpress Music range of phones which were targeted at music loving youngsters. The Xpress Music phones did very well; the new X Series is expected to repeat that success.

The Nokia X series currently consists of two phones: The Nokia X3, a budget music slider phone running on S40 and the Nokia X6, a touchscreen smartphone running on S60 v5.

In this article we will compare these two phones and check out which is a better option for consumers.

Design

The Nokia X6 has a stylish candybar design with the display covering up most of the front face while the Nokia X3 has a standard slider design with a smaller display and a sliding keypad. Both the designs are good and the build quality is excellent.

The X6 has a 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen TFT display with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels while the X3 has a much smaller 2.2 inch TFT display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The X6 definitely has a better display but the X3’s display is also quite good, though small.

User Interface

The Nokia X6 is powered by Symbian OS v9.4 S60v5, the standard Nokia touchscreen smartphone OS. It is much better than the S40 UI sported by the Nokia X3 and also much more capable. It supports both Symbian and J2ME apps while the X3 supports only J2ME apps. It also has multi-tasking capabilities unlike the X3. The X6’s UI is much more refined and detailed than the X3. The capacitive touchscreen on the X6 is a pleasure to use.

Multimedia

The Nokia X6 has a 5 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and dual LED flash which can capture images at a maximum resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. It can handle VGA video recording at 30 FPS and also has a secondary video call camera.

The Nokia X3 has a 3.2 MP camera which can capture images at a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and can record QCIF video at 15 FPS. The Nokia X6’s camera is definitely the better one but the Nokia X3’s camera also takes pretty decent shots, especially for a phone priced that low.

Both the phones have excellent music playback quality, but the X6 wins this round too, thanks partly to the bundled WH-500 headset. You can use custom earphones with both the phones; they have a 3.5 mm audio jack.

In video playback, the X6 wins due to its bigger display and the the ability to play more formats with or without using 3rd party software.

Hardware

The Nokia X6 has an ARM 11 434 MHz processor with 128 MB RAM. It has 32 GB internal memory and doesn’t support memory cards. The X3, on the other hand, has 46 MB internal memory and supports up to 16 GB microSD cards.

The Nokia X6 also comes with the excellent WH-500 headset which is one of the best headsets that come bundled with any phone. The X3 comes bundled with a standard one piece Nokia headset.

Connectivity

The Nokia X6 has all the connectivity options expected in a smartphone: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g with UPnP, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, microUSB 2.0 etc. It also has a GPS receiver with A-GPS and Ovi Maps 3.0.

The X3 only has basic connectivity: GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth with A2DP and microUSB. It misses 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS.

The X6 has a 1320 Li-ion battery which has a talktime of more than 11 hrs while the X3 is powered by a 860 mAh Li-ion battery which has a rated talktime of less than 8 hrs. The X6 definitely has the upper hand here.

Conclusion

Both the Nokia X3 and the Nokia X6 are good options in their respective price ranges. The X6 is a nice touchscreen smartphone which competes with entry level Android smartphones while the X3 is a low end feature phone. We cannot compare the two directly as the X6 is more than double the price of the X3. If you need a basic phone with good music playback, go with the Nokia X3 but if you need a smartphone with a big display and nice audio / video playback, go with the Nokia X6.

The Nokia X3 is priced at around $150 while the Nokia X6 is priced at around $400.
