The Apps You Can’t Live Without

Now that you’ve had a chance to wet your whistle with the iPod Touch and iPhone applications, it’s time to take a look at apps that will probably be running along the top row of your front page. Now, keep in mind that you may not find a particular app useful today, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t useful, it’s just that you have no need for it at the moment. All these apps have great UIs, use less power and are overall just fun to play. Now, without further ado, here are the top three (in no particular order):

Facebook, Myspace, or Twitter Apps

These are essential apps in the modern, Social Networking, Web 2.0 world. I personally am a facebook-ite, but I know some of you out there favor Myspace (especially you younger people), or, Twitter. Now, both Facebook and Myspace have their own, independently developed programs that they released a while back for the app store. These two apps are very well developed and are incredibly user-friendly, in fact, being the definitive app for their respective services have made both of them extremely popular. Twitter on the other hand, has a multitude of programs, one worse than the other. If I were you, I’d make the leap to a fully featured service rather than continue on with Twitter, but if you’d rather carry on, Tweetie is a perfectly good app for that service.

AP Mobile News: Keep Up to Date on Your iPhone

Yet another app that nobody should live without is AP Mobile News. Although the app store boasts a significant number of apps that access news sites and relay the news information back to the iPhone, but none of them are better than the AP’s Mobile News app. This particular Mobile News App is great because of how quickly it displays the news on the iPhone and how easily you can change out the dock icons and the news types that you read most often.

t meaning of the word, the Flixter app easily allows you to see what movies are playing around you and at what times - letting you plan your movie watching on the go. As well as seeing movie times and theaters easier than ever, the app also shows you reviews, upcoming movies, and DVD releases. It’s a must-have for any serious movie fan with an iPhone.

Shazam App

Rounding out the list is the best app I currently have on my phone, and one that you should download as soon as you’re done reading this list of apps. Shazam has finally brought music recognition software to the iPhone, in a way that no previous iteration of the software has ever been able to. Different songs are recognized easily and quickly at the tap of a button. As of this writing, I’ve yet to encounter a song “in the wild” that this app couldn’t identify, so long as it was playing at an acceptable level.

Honorable Mention: Flixter

Even though it’s not “essential” in the strictest meaning of the word, the Flixter app easily allows you to see what movies are playing around you and at what times - letting you plan your movie watching on the go. As well as seeing movie times and theaters easier than ever, the app also shows you reviews, upcoming movies, and DVD releases. It’s a must-have for any serious movie fan with an iPhone.
