BlackBerry Desktop Manager

BlackBerry Desktop Manager is a software that links the content and applications of a BlackBerry device with the computer. It works with Blackberry devices very much the same way iTunes works with iPhones.

How to Install Blackberry Desktop Manager on your PC

  1. To install the software, first you need to download the latest version, then open the file and follow the prompts until the installation is complete.

  2. Close the installation wizard and restart your computer to launch Blackberry Desktop Manager from the icon placed on the desktop.

  3. Now, connect your Blackberry device to the computer with the help of a USB cable.

  4. Automatically, a “add a new blackberry device” wizard will appear. Simply, click on “get started with this device” and follow the prompts to configure your blackberry phone.

  5. The last screen of the “add a new blackberry device” wizard will ask you to put together the different settings presented by the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Indicate your preferred choices and click Finish to complete the “Add a New BlackBerry Device” wizard.

  6. If your phone is linked with BlackBerry Enterprise Server then add your enterprise email address by following the on-screen prompts.

How to Backup and Restore

Backup Device Data

Turn on the mass storage mode to back up data from the built-in media storage of your device.

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, select ‘device’ then click on ‘back up’.
  2. Choose one from ‘full’, ‘quick’, ‘custom’ option and select the check box next to the data you want to back up.
  3. If you want to back up data from the built-in media storage of your Blackberry device, select the ‘files saved on my built-in media storage’ and then click ‘back up’.

Restore Device Data

Turn on the mass storage mode to restore data that is in your built-in media storage. But keep in mind that once you restore data to your Blackberry device, all the previously stored files will be deleted before the backup is restored.

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, select ‘device’ then click on ‘restore’.
  2. Select the backup file that contains the data you want to restore and click ‘restore’.

How to Synchronize Data

Organizer data can be easily synchronized between your BlackBerry device and your computer to keep the data alike in both locations.

Set Up Organizer Data Synchronization:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, first select ‘organizer’ and then ‘configure settings’.
  2. Check beside an organizer application in the Intellisync setup window and click ‘setup’.
  3. From the available desktop applications list, select the organizer application on your computer and click ’next'.
  4. Now choose the desired synchronization directions for the data in your organizer application. Click ‘next’ then ‘finish.
  5. If you wish to set up synchronization for another organizer application, repeat from step 2.

Synchronize Organizer Data:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager select ‘Organizer’.
  2. Evaluate the organizer applications and settings selected for synchronization and if required, make necessary changes.
  3. Click ‘Sync’.

How to Use a BlackBerry as a Modem

You can use your BlackBerry device as a modem to connect to the Internet. Before you can use the BlackBerry device as a modem, you must set up Mobile Internet settings.

Mobile Internet Settings:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager click ‘tools’ and then ‘mobile internet settings’.
  2. From the ‘profile’ drop down list, select the profile of your wireless service provider and click ‘ok’.
  3. If your wireless service provider does not appear in the drop down list, contact the service provider, determine information from them and provide it in the ‘profile setting’ section.

Blackberry Device as a Modem:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager click ‘tools’ and then ‘start mobile internet’.
  2. And then simply click ‘connect’.

How to Manage BlackBerry Applications

Once you connect your device to your computer, a list of applications will appear on the Applications screen in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

How to add, delete or update applications:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager select ‘applications’.
  2. From the device application list, click on ‘+’ icon to update an application, ‘x’ icon to delete an application and click ‘import files’ to install an application (.alx) saved on your computer.
  3. Review the changes from the application summary pane and click ‘apply’.

How to Put Music and Videos on a BlackBerry

Music: Turn on the mass storage mode to synchronize iTunes playlists and Windows Media Player playlists with your BlackBerry device.

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click ‘Music’.
  2. To synchronize specific playlists or songs, select the check box beside the playlists or songs and if you want to synchronize the complete music library then select ‘all music’.
  3. Click ‘sync’.

Pictures:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click ‘Pictures’.

  2. From the computer pictures tab, browse and select the folder that contains the pictures and click ‘ok’ and lastly ‘sync’.

Videos:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click ‘Videos’.
  2. From the computer videos tab, select the check box besides the video(s) you want to synchronize and click ‘sync’.

Import Pictures

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click ‘Pictures’.
  2. From the device pictures tab, click ‘all’ device pictures from the drop down list.
  3. Then click ‘Import’.

Import Videos

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click ‘Videos’.
  2. From the device videos tab, click ‘all’ device pictures from the drop down list.
  3. Then click ‘Import’.

Wi-Fi music Sync

Wi-Fi music sync on Blackberry device can be used to browse playlists and songs that are in your iTunes and Windows Media Player library on your PC.

Install Wi-Fi music sync:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry handset to your PC and from BlackBerry Desktop Manager click ‘tools’ and then ‘Wi-Fi music sync’.
  2. From the Wi-Fi music sync window, click ‘yes’ on the next screen and click ‘finish’.
  3. Note the Wi-Fi requirements from the confirmation screen and click ‘close’.
  4. Now to synchronize songs between your PC and your device, click ‘music’. Keep your device connected to your PC via a USB cable, if you are doing this for the first time.

Connect to Wi-Fi Network:

  1. From the top of the screen of your Blackberry device, click on ‘manage connections’ and then click ‘set up Wi-Fi’.
  2. To connect to a Wi-Fi network that does not require authentication or a public hotspot, select the ‘show open networks only’ and click on the Wi-Fi network to connect.
  3. And, if you want to connect to your Wi-Fi network that requires authentication, then type the password for the network and connect to it.

Download a Song to your Blackberry from your PC:

  1. From the Blackberry’s home screen, click on the Media icon and then the Music icon.
  2. Browse and select the song or playlist that you want to download. The song or playlist gets downloaded to your phone, when it’s within the range of Wi-Fi connection or is connected to the PC via a USB cable.
