Setting Up the BlackBerry Pearl

Before using the BlackBerry Pearl, follow these steps in the BlackBerry Pearl manual to install the battery and SIM card.

  • Press the release button for the battery cover and slide it off. If the battery is inside, take it out.
  • Slide open the SIM card door.
  • Install the SIM card with the metal contacts facing down, and the cut off corner facing the bottom of the device.
  • Close and lock the SIM card door.
  • Install the battery and close the battery cover.

Once the battery and SIM card are installed, charge the battery. Then, turn the phone on and run the setup wizard. The functions of the BlackBerry Pearl keys are shown below.

After getting acquainted with the features of the phone, make a call and send a text message. Follow these steps to make a call:

  • On the home screen, type a number, or type part of a contact name and select the contact or phone number that appears.
  • Then press the Send key, which is the button with the green telephone receiver. After the call is completed, press the End/Power key, which is the button with the red telephone receiver.

Follow these steps in the BlackBerry Pearl manual to send an email message:

  • In a message list, press the Menu key, which is the button immediately to the left of the trackball and features dots.
  • Select Compose Email.
  • In the To field, place the cursor and type an email address, contact name, or type part of a contact name and select it as it appears.
  • Type the message and then press the Menu key. Select Send.

Sending a Text Message, Adding a Contact, Taking a Picture, and Visiting a Website

To send an SMS text message, follow these steps:

  • In a message list, press the Menu key and select Compose SMS.
  • Select a contact from the address book, or select Use Once, type the phone number, and press the Trackball.
  • Type the message.
  • Press the Trackball and select Send.

To add a contact, follow these steps:

  • Press the Menu key in the address book.
  • Select New Address and type the contact information.
  • Press the Menu key and select Save.

To take a picture and send it, follow these steps:

  • In the camera, press the Trackball to snap a picture.
  • To send the picture, select the Message Icon.
  • To set the picture as a wallpaper, select the Wallpaper Icon.
  • To save the picture, select the Folder Icon.
  • To take another picture, select the Camera Icon.

To visit a website, follow these steps:

  • Open the web browser and enter the website address in the web address field. If the field doesn’t show up, press the Menu key and select Go To.

Notifications - Profiles, Ringtones, LED

There are several ways the BlackBerry Pearl alerts you to incoming calls, email, and SMS. Follow these steps in the BlackBerry Pearl manual to set a notification profile:

  • In the profile list, select Advanced.
  • Press the Menu key and select New Profile.
  • Type a name for the profile and highlight the item.
  • Press the Menu key and select Edit.
  • Set the notification options.
  • Press the Menu key and select Save.

To change a ringtone, follow these steps:

  • In the notification profile list, select Advanced.
  • Highlight a notification profile and press the Menu key.
  • Select Show Tunes, select a media folder, and highlight a song, ringtone, or voice note.
  • Press the Menu key and select Set As Phone Tune.

To prevent a notification during a call:

  • In profile list, select Advanced, and highlight the notification profile.
  • Press the Menu key, select Edit, and highlight an item.
  • Press the Menu key, select Edit, and check the No box for the Notify Me During Calls options.
  • Press the Menu key and select Save.

To set the type of notification, follow these steps:

  • To receive LED notifications only, select Quiet in the profile list.
  • For vibrate notifications, select Vibrate in the profile list.
  • To turn off all notifications, select Off in the profile list.

Guide to LED notifications:

  • Green - You are in the wireless coverage area.
  • Blue - The BlackBerry is connected to a Bluetooth enabled device.
  • Red - A new message was received.
  • Amber - The battery power is low.

BlackBerry Shortcuts

To access features easily, use these shortcuts from the BlackBerry Pearl manual:

Camera Shortcuts:

  • To take a picture, press the Right Convenience Key, which is a button located on the side of the BlackBerry.
  • To zoom into an object before taking the picture, press the Volume Up button, and to zoom out of an object, press the Volume Down button.
  • To change the flash mode, press the Space key.

Picture, Video, and Music Shortcuts:

  • To zoom into a picture, press 3, and to zoom out of a picture, press 9. Return the picture to original size by pressing 7.
  • To pause a video or song, press the Mute key. To resume, press the Mute key.

Message Shortcuts:

  • In a message, press the Exclamation Point key to reply.
  • To forward a message, press the Period key, while in a message.
  • In a message list, move to the top of the list by pressing 1.

Typing Shortcuts:

  • To insert a period, press the Space key twice. This automatically capitalizes the next letter.
  • To capitalize a letter, hold the letter key.
