What Is A Niche?

So, you have decided to start a blog. Everybody and their mother is excited about blogging. Some of them are even bragging that they are making money or sales on their blog. The question is, what should you blog about? Everyone is telling you that you need to find your blog niche. At this point, you may be thinking, “Sure, but first of all what is a niche and how do I find the right niche market for me?”.

First, what is a niche? A niche is kind of like a category or a topic. Almost anything can be a niche. Some are more general than others. For example, you may decide that you want your blog niche to be dogs. But if you are planning on selling a particular product on your blog you may choose to narrow that topic down more to make it more in line with what you are selling. Say you sell dog houses. You could narrow your blog niche down to dog houses to make it more specific to the product that you sell. Keep in mind though that you also don’t want to go to narrow or you will find it very difficult to find things to write about on your blog on a regular basis.

The Right Niche Market

We have answered the question “what is a niche”, now how do you find the right niche for you? For some people, this may be quite easy. If you already have a business or a product that you sell, you may already have a niche market that you want to appeal to. This market may already fit well into your network of friends and associates that may be the first to read and help you spread the word about your new blog.

If you don’t already have a niche market that your blog could easily blend into then it is time to look at some other possibilities. It is important to choose a blog niche that is something you are passionate about. This is important because you will want to be posting to your blog on a regular basis and if your blog niche is not something that fires you up, it is going to be difficult to stay excited about your blog and keep writing it.

Keyword Research

Next you will want to do some keyword research on the internet and see if your niche is being searched for. You can use an online tool such as the SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool for this to find out the monthly search volume of your niche from various tools all in this one tool. Do not just look at the main word that you are searching. Dig a little deeper than that and see what other keyword phrase could be used for your niche market. At the same time, be aware of topics that may be overly saturated already. These niches may not be the best choice since there are already huge amounts of competition in these areas. For example, you will probably not make a great deal of money by choosing online marketing as a new blog niche unless you have some unique secret that can make you stand out against the other millions blogs already out there about online marketing. The competition is fierce in this niche and it would be very difficult to step in and become profitable with a blog in this niche.

If you follow these few simple steps, you should have a pretty clear idea of where you are headed with your blog and ready to move on to setting up your blog. Happy Blogging!
