The iPod Nano does not have a power button like the iPod Touch. I know when I first got mine a couple of years ago, I was asking how do you turn off an iPod Nano. All you have to do is press and hold down the Play/Pause button for a few seconds, and that will turn it off. What’s cool is that it will save your place in whatever song you were playing or playlist you had going, so you won’t have to start over. In this article, we’ll discuss why it is important that you do turn off your iPod Nano on occasion and other things you can do to ensure a long battery life on your iPod Nano.

Apple iPod Nano Battery Life
The iPod Nano is not a cheap device and so naturally you should take care of it to get your money’s worth. Part of what makes it so cool is that it features a very tough internal battery that lets you recharge it instead of having to go out and buy new batteries. The problem is that even the internal battery has a limited life, and how long that battery will last depends greatly on how you use the Nano and the timing of your charges. There are a few things you can do to actually prolong the battery life of your iPod, and they are really easy.
Hot and Cold
Don’t leave your iPod Nano in your car like so many people do. During the summer months where the interior of your vehicle will reach well over 100 degrees, it really puts a hurting on your little iPod’s battery. It’s not good for the device’s internal memory, either. All that heat can greatly shorten the life of your iPod and it is not recommended that you leave it anywhere that the temperature will go above 90 degrees.
Be careful with letting your iPod get too cold during the winter months, because it can be damaged by freezing temperatures just like it can by excessive heat. Apple recommends that you keep your iPod at regular room temperature whenever possible.
Use and Recharge
One of the worst things you can do for any rechargeable device is to let the battery run out and then stay uncharged for long periods of time. Doing so will actually change the chemical make-up of the cells inside the battery and will result in shorter battery life or other problems. Apple recommends that you regularly use your iPod to run the battery down, then charge it right back after the power has been mostly drained. Your iPod should be run down and recharged at least once a month in order to keep the battery healthy.
Turning Off Features
Keeping the backlight running on your iPod Nano will drain the battery very quickly, so try to resist the temptation to always have it on. I know that sometimes the screen can be hard to see in certain light situations, but it is so bright that it really sucks the life out of the battery.
Another feature you should consider disabling is the EQ, or equalizer. It is software controlled and requires more work from the iPod Nano to enhance the sound of whatever you play, so having it enabled will run down your battery more quickly. If you are playing your iPod through your car stereo, you don’t need to use the EQ.
