Cleaning LCD Screens

LCD screens require a little more attention compared to their CRT cousins. They are more sensitive and they are easily scratched and damaged. Before giving our tips on cleaning the LCD screens, make sure that you follow these warnings carefully:

  1. Do not use any kind of paper; toilet paper, tissue paper, towels or another non-ultrasoft cloth,
  2. Do not use any kind of chemicals containing alcohols, ammonia, acetone, acids or chlorides. These chemicals react with the LCD screens and cause irreversible damage,
  3. Do not spray any kind of liquid directly on the LCD screen.

We can use a soft, dry cloth and distilled water to clean the screen. A microfiber cloth, which is used to clean the glasses, will be a better choice. My personal choice is a cleaning set, such as the Kroo Complete LCD Cleaning Solution Kit or Monster TV Alcohol-Free Screen Kit, which you can get for around USD 10. The kits come with their own cloths and solutions, so you don’t need to bother with anything else. OK, now we are ready to go.

  1. Turn off your LCD TV. The dirty areas are better seen when the screen is dark.
  2. Spray the liquid on the cloth and wipe the screen very gently, horizontally.
  3. Do not press the screen when cleaning. Apply enough pressure to remove the dirt, not more. You can irrevocably damage the pixels otherwise.
  4. Wait for a couple of seconds for the liquid to evaporate completely and go back to the second step if necessary.
  5. To clean the plastic screen edges, you can use any type of plastic-safe cleaner you want, given that you don’t allow the cleaner to get in contact with the LCD.
  6. Do not turn on the LCD screen until it is completely dry.

That’s it, you can now turn your monitor on and enjoy the crisp colors.
