A lot of people, myself included, have been asking the question “Does the Shake Weight really work?” The Shake Weight is a quick weight loss program in a long line of similar fads, designed to “melt away” excess arm fat and tone your arm and shoulder muscles. It is basically a dumbbell that vibrates back and forth while you hold it. After looking at a good Shake Weight review, reading a few personal trainers’ thoughts on the product and eventually trying it out myself, here is my own Shake Weight review.

So, does the Shake Weight really work? Before we answer that, let’s look at the design. The Shake Weight is very durable; mine has survived multiple drops without a problem. The only wear and tear it shows is a few scratches from one of the times it got dropped. It is quite surprising how sturdily constructed the Shake Weight is because most products of this type tend to be made from cheap materials and break easily. Another great thing about the Shake Weight is that it does not use batteries (it works using Dynamic Inertia) and it only weighs 2.5 pounds, making it very easy for most people to use. The fact that it does not weigh a lot becomes a negative, though, when it comes to performance issues.

Portability (5 out of 5)

Since it is small and lightweight, the Shake Weight can fit right into your luggage or gym bag without a problem. Also, if you are on a trip you will not have to carry extra batteries – the Shake Weight does not use them – or hope you can find them in a nearby store like you sometimes have to with some other portable exercise products.

Now, to answer the question: does the Shake Weight really work? I would have to say both yes and no. Yes, because it does give you some sort of workout. No, because it does not live up to all the hype made about it.

The makers of the Shake Weight claim that their product:

  • Increases muscular activity by up to 300 percent more than a workout with traditional weights.
  • It will get rid of excess fat and tone the muscles in your arms.
  • You can sculpt your shoulders and tighten saggy chest muscles.
  • You only need to use this product for 6 minutes a day to see results.

This is all by following a 6 minute routine on the provided DVD. As a quick weight loss program, the Shake Weight and companion DVD fail. The truth is you cannot tone your muscles by working out for just 6 minutes a day. You have to do much more by combining your use of the Shake Weight with a nutrition plan (such as shake supplements) and other exercises.

The DVD only focuses on the upper body and it does not give advice on how best to position your body while doing the exercise. The Shake Weight itself has a limited range of motion (which prevents you from completely working all of the muscles in your arms), works best with one arm at time, and while it does tighten the muscles in your arm, that is not necessarily a sign you are getting a good workout. It is possible for beginners to achieve a burn while using this product, but for everyone else this could be a good pre-exercise stretching tool or a way to speed recovery of sore arms.

If you are hoping to use the Shake Weight to help lose weight in your arms and tone your muscles, as I stated before you need to combine it with both diet plans that include things like shake supplements and other exercise routines. So, does the Shake Weight really work? Unfortunately, it’s not a simple yes or no answer; it depends on what your intentions are when you pick it up.
