If you are new to using a Kindle, you may wonder, " How do I bookmark a book I am reading on my Kindle?" Good news! The Kindle will automatically save your place when you stop reading your book. You can also add additional bookmarks throughout the book. The bookmarks show on the page as a small shaded square in the upper right hand corner of the page. You can add bookmarks easily, and it only takes a few minutes, with a few short steps. It is only a little different, depending upon which Kindle you own.

Kindle 1st Generation

The Kindle 1st Generation does save your place automatically when you stop reading, but you can still add additional bookmarks in the book anywhere you want. The Kindle 1st Generation lets you place a bookmark at the exact place you stopped reading, so no more skimming down the page trying to figure out where you stopped. All of your bookmarks are saved in a file called My Clippings that is always available on your Kindle Home screen.

Place the Bookmark

When you are ready to place the bookmark on your page, simply put the cursor at the top of the page that you want to bookmark, and then click the select wheel. You can also select the Menu option shown at the bottom of the page, and then click Add Bookmark from the side menu. You will automatically see a bookmark icon at the top of the page.

Remove a Bookmark

If you want to remove a bookmark that you have already in place, put the cursor at the top of the page that has the bookmark, and then click the select wheel. You can also select the Menu option shown at the bottom of the page, and then click Delete Bookmark. The bookmark will be automatically removed.

View the Bookmarks

If you want to see what bookmarks you have set in a certain book, click Go to Bookmark from the menu. Each bookmark you have set in the book will be shown, showing you the page number and the line on the page you have bookmarked.

You can move among the bookmarks you have set by placing the cursor by the progress bar at the bottom, and then click the select wheel. Small inverted triangles will appear on the progress bar. These indicate where the bookmarks are in the book. You can press the Next Page and Previous Page buttons to move from bookmark to bookmark.

Kindle 2nd Generation

On the Kindle 2nd generation, you can put bookmarks anywhere you want. You can also place multiple bookmarks within the same book. If you want to return to a bookmark, simply select My Names & Marks from the Menu. Pages that are bookmarked will have a dog ear icon in the upper right-hand corner.

Place the Bookmark

Navigate to the page in the book you are reading that you want to bookmark and press the Menu button. Use the 5-way controller on your Kindle to select Add a Bookmark. The page will automatically be bookmarked.

You can also create a bookmark by pressing Alt + B.

Remove the Bookmark

If you want to remove a bookmark you have placed, navigate to the page you have bookmarked, press the Menu button, and then click Delete Bookmark. The bookmark will automatically be deleted.

View Bookmarks

If you want to view the bookmarks that you have set on your Kindle, press the Menu button and click My Notes & Marks. A list of your current bookmarks will display. Select the bookmark you want to view from the list.

Remove Several Bookmarks At One Time

If you need to delete several bookmarks at one time, press the Menu button and click My Notes and Marks. Underline the bookmark you want to delete using the 5-way controller and press the Delete key. Repeat these steps to remove the other bookmarks.
