Troubleshooting Update Issues

If you are having problems updating your Kindle, there are some troubleshooting steps you can take.

If the Update menu options on the Settings page are grayed out, the update file is in the wrong directory, or you downloaded an incorrect update file for the type of Kindle you own. Connect your Kindle back to your computer via the USB cable and verify the correct update file was downloaded, and that it is present in the root directory on the Kindle.

If you receive an error message when you select Update Your Kindle, this means the software update file was renamed. Delete the software file you downloaded on your computer, and start the process again. This can also happen if the update file was only partially copied to your computer.
