How do I get Rid of my Firewall? Removing a Firewall
How do I get rid of my Firewall?
How do I get rid of my firewall? While I will never recommend running without a firewall, be it on a networked computer or a standalone computer, there are some cases where you may want to know how to uninstall a firewall. Normally, this would happen under the following conditions: (a) facing too many problems connecting to the Internet; (b) programs are not functioning properly or behaving abnormally; or (c) improve Internet speed.
The last option is just hype spread all over the Internet. If you think removing a firewall will get you faster access to websites, it may be true for some websites. However, at the same time, you are also vulnerable to malware and hack attempts at an even faster rate. If you attribute your need for getting rid of your firewall to the last option, I would suggest you should rather understand the security problems on the Internet and keep the firewall. There are better ways to increase the speed of the Internet.
Coming back to the question of what is involved in removing a firewall, let’s see what is involved.
How Do I get rid of a router firewall?
If you are using a DSL router to connect to the network or Internet, you also have a firmware firewall in the router. If you wish, you can reset the router and choose not to configure the router firewall. Alternatively, you can completely disable the router firewall so that it does not create any problems. To access the internal settings of your router, type the router’s IP address in the address bar of your browser. It may prompt for an ID and password. In most cases, the ID is ‘admin’ and password is ‘password’ by default. If the router does not accept these, check with your ISP or the router documentation for the passwords.
Removing a software firewall
This section helps you with removing firewall software. As you install any third party firewall, it turns off the Windows firewall automatically. You can check this by clicking on the Firewall icon in Control Panel. If you have a third party firewall on your computer, you can always use the Add/Remove program to uninstall the firewall software. If your firewall software is a standalone firewall, you can easily get rid of it using the Add/Remove option. On the other hand, if the firewall is part of an Internet Security Suite, in the Add/Remove Programs, see if you can find the option Modify next to Remove. If the option is there, click on the button and uncheck the firewall before clicking on Next in the un-installation wizard. If there is no such option, you will have to remove the entire Internet Security Pack and reinstall again with Custom option. This will give you an option to uncheck the firewall so that the installer does not install the firewall with antivirus and antimalware.
Once you have removed the third party firewall, or if you do not have any third party firewall, your default Windows Firewall is active. You can deactivate it using the Firewall option in the Control Panel.
After you disable the Windows firewall, you need to run a registry scan for any leftover keys. You may use any of your preferred registry cleaners to check for invalid and leftover keys.
IMPORTANT: Though the article answers your question – how do I get rid of my firewall – I strongly recommend that you should use at least the default Windows firewall after removing a firewall, if you are not planning to install another firewall.
