When you have a rough outline, start dividing your goals into smaller steps. What do you have to do in order to reach your goal? Make your steps realistic ones. You cannot quit your job from one day to the other and live from writing. You need to prepare such a great change. For example, research online content sites and magazines. Learn about SEO. Write your first articles and short stories. Hone your writing skills. Learn how to write query letters and so on. You see, a great goal consists of many smaller steps.
The same goes for quitting smoking, losing weight, running every day and many more personal goals. If you start at zero, you cannot jump to one hundred per cent. You have to take one step at a time, step by step, until you finally reach your goal.

Tell as many of your family and friends as possible about your next step. The more people know about it, the higher will your motivation be. If you have to lose your face if you give in, you will be astonished about how much strength and willpower you have.
Find other people with the same goal. Meet regularly to talk about your progress, your worries, your difficulties and your weaknesses. Even more important, talk about each and every little success. It will keep you motivated.
While you follow your personal development strategy, do not forget to reward yourself. In the beginning, you should reward yourself for each accomplished step. As you advance, make the rewards more sparsely. Set yourself a thing you have craved for some time now as final reward. This could be a vacation in your favorite destination, a new but expensive dress, a new car, a guitar course, whatever you deem appropriate.
Typical Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Many people make the mistake to set their goals too high. When they realize they cannot reach their goals in the near future or that it requires a huge amount of strength and willpower, they quit. Therefore, make your steps as small and easy as possible. It does not matter if you have one hundred steps to reach your goal as long as you reach it in the end.
Another common mistake is not telling anyone about your plans. Many people seem to think that they will fail so they do not tell anybody in order to keep their face when failing. Do not fall into this trap! Tell as many of your acquaintances as possible because the knowledge that they know will keep you motivated. You have much more at stake if you fail. If you keep quiet, it will be so much easier for your inner temptation to convince you of quitting the attempt.
