The first thing to consider when starting a home based tutoring business is: What can I tutor?
The answer to this question will determine much of the rest of your tutoring business. Basically, you can tutor just about anything, as long as you are good enough at it. You must be very knowledgable in all aspects of a certain topic to be able to teach it. Some tutoring ideas are:
College students tutoring other students.
Homeschooling parents tutoring other students as well as their own.
Specialized skills, such as welding.
Computer typing classes.
Piano lessons.
Guitar lessons.

Who can you tutor?
I want to work from home as a tutor, so, who can I tutor? This question is also very important. In order to make it as a tutor, there has to be at least some need for your services. Like any product or service, the law of demand is very important. Take your local city or town into consideration. If there is a significant demand to learn the area that you are tutoring, you will be able to get a steady flow of clients. If there is not a significant demand, you will probably only get a client once in a while. You may want to consider tutoring something different if you don’t believe there will be a significant demand for your topic.

How much time can you devote to tutoring?
For an at home based tutoring service, it is best to start out slow and work your way into it. No need to quit your day job immediately and decide that you are going to be a full time tutor. You have to have some idea of how well you are going to do before making any kind of moves like that. Begin by offering your tutoring as a weekend service, on Saturdays and Sundays. If you find that you are drawing a lot of interest and potential customers, then it’s time to consider being a full time tutor.

How much can you make being an at home tutor?
It all depends. If you are tutoring a topic that is high in demand, with little competition, you can charge a lot for your services. But remember, you have to always have a steady flow of clients and customers to stay in business and make it full time. Payscale.com lists tutors as making anywhere from $10 an hour to $40 an hour.
