The most difficult thing for anyone to do is to evaluate themselves objectively without being defensive or rationalizing behaviors. Through the practice obtained at the training level and through employment, nurses learn to put feelings and emotions aside, because at some point, they will have to use the same evaluation techniques to rate people they supervise and to ensure consistency in their patient’s quality of care.

Personal Self-Evaluation

There is no one specific self evaluation sample for nurses to use. A personal self evaluation for nurses can be tailored to fit the nurse and his specific field. This evaluation is used to determine if the current field of work is still as satisfactory five years later as it was at the beginning. By evaluating honestly the pitfalls of the job, work environment, colleague associations and duties of the position, a nurse may choose to continue to utilize her skills in different venues by attaining additional education and credentials or by making lateral moves within the nursing profession.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does the work environment still suit you and your skills? or would you rather work in another department?- List Pros and Cons of your current situation.
  • Do you need more training and credentials to be a surgical nurse? Pediatric nurse? Or any other specialty? If so, are you willing to commit the time and financial resources to achieve this goal?
  • Do you see yourself working shift work for the rest of your life?
  • Are you better suited to be a Case Manager and be a liaison between patients, providers and insurance companies?
  • Would a lateral move to another department be more advantageous to your career goals?
  • Are you bored with your workload and requirements of the position?
  • Is the job too stressful?
  • Do your enjoy working with the other staff members?
  • Would you be a happier and healthier person working in another field?

Research facilities may employ nurses to monitor the health of the patients undergoing trials and for consultations.

Some nurses write. They write knowledgeably to meet the requirements demanded by state and federal agencies to obtain grants for hospitals and medical research companies. Others write educational pamphlets and informational sheets for state and federal health departments.

At some point in every nurse’s life, working shift work in the emergency room or throughout the hospital gets on their nerves and takes away from the satisfaction originally found in the career. Part of a self-evaluation should include other positions in the community that requires skills, experience and the confidence of years of practice.

On a separate page, list all the different occupations that require a nursing degree or medical education that may appeal to you for personal and financial reasons. For instance, a school nurse gets a fixed salary with small yearly increases, but gets excellent benefits from the state or county that includes a generous vacation package and retirement plan. This is an option for nurses with a specialty in pediatrics and have excellent communication skills to interact with children and adults – especially stressed parents.

The role of the nurse is to ensure that patients gets their needs met, however, this job may not be for everyone since often, the firm they work for gets paid for by the insurance company or corporation whose main intent is denying services and procedures. In this private position, nurses establish their own appointments and handle their own case load at convenient hours. Nurses interact with other service providers and develop permanent connections in the community that can be beneficial in changing careers in the future.

Private practice is another option worth looking into since most doctor’s offices have regular hours with the occasional alternating Saturday. The salaries are varied depending on the need and qualifications but for those who need steady work with standard daylight hours, this is good option.

Final Thoughts

The vast majority of nurses enter into the profession with the noble goal of providing a valuable service to their community and as an advocate for those who are in dire need of help and in very frightening situations. However, nurses are not machines; they have personal lives that may no longer accommodate the work schedule or the grueling demands of their position. Nurses get sick too and, just like everyone else, they get older. A rigorous and demanding physical occupation may not be fitting all the way through retirement age and while self evaluations at the work place are mandatory, a personal self-evaluation would ensure that the work is still a good fit for the changes that are inevitable in everyone’s life.

Only you know what type of nursing field is best suited to your current needs and skills and the happier you are with your decision, the better the mandatory self-evaluation results will be.
