Brainstorming
How much is too much? How much is too little? Designing printable thank you cards isn’t incredibly hard, but does warrant a little bit of brainstorming. For example, you probably want to have something more whimsical if someone has done a light chore for you, such as watering your plants while you were out of town. However, if they had sent you food when you had a death in the family, something a little more serious might be in order.
If you received an awesome birthday present, you may want to have some fun with the card! Received some great wedding presents? Something elegant may be in order. If you stop and take the time to think about the feeling you’re trying to convey, you’ll find that the process becomes much easier later on when you design your card.
Wording
If you stop and think about it, there are a lot of ways to say “Thank you!” Here’s a list of some of the best examples I could come up with, so you can find just the right words to express how you feel.

In addition to saying thank you, it’s also an option to mention the gift that they gave you, and how you plan on using it. Or even better, if they got you something nice for your kitchen, you could always cook them something to send along with your card.

Symbols, Fonts, & Graphics: What To Look For
I’m not entirely sure if it’s a blessing or a curse, but “Thank You” doesn’t exactly have a lot of visual cues associated with it. Take a trip down any aisle of any card store, and you’ll rarely see two generic Thank You cards that look the same. While this means that you might be starting blind, you do need to realize that this is a great opportunity to take some artistic liberty. In addition to that, you can use the context (eg: the reason you’re thanking the person) to give you some direction.
