Capturing winter landscapes can be difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing. With these photography tips, you can learn how to easily capture stunning winter landscapes.
It’s already winter and Christmas is fast approaching. Are you excited like me to take photographs of the snow? It is really a visual treat to capture snow and other winter landscapes. How about capturing the morning sun from the window of your bedroom? Capturing the morning sun that looks like a thin light in the midst of the clouds is really exciting. Few of my friends worry as they are unable to capture winter landscapes properly. Let me share some tips to capture winter landscapes that you will remember forever.
1. Concentrate on the lighting. Just briskly walk outdoors and start to observe sunrise and sunset . This will be an exercise and at the same time you can capture some wonderful winter landscapes. Many who take winter landscapes believe that sunset or sunrise will look good only during summer. This is not true. Think of your subject and then choose the light based on your subject. (Ref. 2. Concentrate on composition. What is composition? It deals with organizing elements or things. A neatly organized picture definitely looks great. Decide on what you wish to capture. If you want to capture those beautiful trees covered with snow, try capturing scenes where trees are the main subject ; don’t capture scenes where you have so many people around and there are only few snow laden trees. 3. Photograph patterns. Have you captured those pictures or patterns formed on sand in the beaches during summer? You can do the same with ice in winter. Look whether there is a pattern . Go in for capturing 2-d or two-dimensional images in the ice. The best way to take 2-d shots is by looking the scene with one eye closed. When you do this, you might feel that what you thought to be a great scene is really not worth capturing.
4. Learn about proper exposure. Exposure plays a vital role when you capture winter landscapes. Have you felt that a stunning scene that you captured in your camera looked very vague when you transferred it to your computer monitor? This is what happens when proper exposure is not given. Every type of file has its own exposure level; for example, what is right exposure for a JPEG file may not be right for a GIF file or a PNG file. Try to capture things that are simple rather capturing complicated images or pictures. Zoom only when necessary.
5. Capture winter shadows. They are definitely one of the best winter landscapes to capture. You would be amazed to see the shadows created by trees. These are natural patterns and therefore would look really great and splendid. (Ref. Fig 3 – Winter shadows)
