In a recent Bright Hub discussion I was asked, “What photo sharing tool do you recommend? ” I figured what better way to answer that question than with an article bragging about my favourite online photo sharing website. The answer - as I’m sure you’ve already deduced by this article’s title - is none other than Flickr . Here’s why:

On Flickr’s “About” page, they claim they are “…the WD-40 that makes it easy to get photos or video from one person to another in whatever way they want.” I wouldn’t disagree with this statement. They provide you with tools to organize your photos, several uploading options, get updates from family and friends, receive comments from other Flickr members, send out a “guest pass” for those who don’t have a Flickr account, and so much more!

There are two types of account you can have with Flickr. Flickr’s Basic account is free. If you’d like to have a Pro account it will cost $24.95 for a one year subscription. You don’t need to pay to take advantage of the features. The Basic account will be more than enough for a lot of people, but even if it isn’t, the fee certainly won’t break the bank. Here is a comparison of the two (information taken from Flickr’s FAQ page):

  • 3 sets
  • Photostream views limited to the 200 most recent images
  • Post any of your photos in up to 10 group pools
  • Only smaller (resized) images accessible (though the originals are saved in case you upgrade later)

I’d also like to point out that Flickr has Privacy Controls. This is a great option for those who would like to only share their photos with family and friends. With the privacy settings, you’re in control over who views your photos.
