Create a Copy

There is maybe nothing worse than thinking that you’ve captured the perfect photograph, and it comes out blurry. And, that photograph is usually of an event that you can’t easily recreate. But, you may not have to give up all hope. If you have any type of photo editing software program, then you can fix blurry photos.

The first thing that you want to do is save a copy of your photograph. In certain programs, any changes that you make to your photograph will overwrite the original. So, save a copy using the Save As feature. For example, if your photograph is named cats, just save your copy as cats1, and then make all of your changes to the copy.

If you like the way the copy looks after you make your changes, simply save it as the original name, which will overwrite your source copy.

Auto Fix

Now that you have your copy, start with the auto fix option. Sometimes if the blur isn’t too bad, this will correct the problem. If it doesn’t work, you’ve only lost a few seconds as opposed to several hours. Frurthermore, if it doesn’t look right, then simply undo the changes.

Hue and Saturation

The next step that you want to try is increasing the saturation and hue of your photo. This will improve the details of the photograph and decrease the overall blur. You should make incremental changes as opposed to pushing the sliders up the maximum.

Many programs have a preview feature where you can see what your photograph looks like before you commit to the changes. Use this as your guide.

Sharpen

Follow this step up with the sharpen feature. Sharpening your photo basically increases the overall contrast along the edges of your photograph. Again, most programs have a slider feature for sharpening photos. Make your photo sharper while previewing your photo. If your photo does, however, get over-sharpened, then simply use the un-sharpen option, or more the slider back a degree or two.

Avoiding Blurry Photographs

While these steps will reduce minor blurring, it’s actually very hard to correct major blurring in a photograph. Instead, you should try to avoid the blur at all possible cost. Many cameras and lenses now come with optical stabilization, which helps reduce shaking, and shaking is often the most common cause of blurry images.

Invest in a tripod, which keeps your camera steady while you are taking pictures. Also, manipulate your shutter speeds. Higher shutter speeds usually result in less blurry pictures. If you are taking pictures in lowlight, then increase your ISO and keep the camera steady. Images are more likely to be blurry in bad light.

Finally, take as many pictures as possible. Sometimes even if you take all the previously mentioned precautions, you may still have blurry images. Taking a lot of pictures almost ensures that at least one of them will come out right.
