Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition Review
This is a review of the new Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition. It is a S40 mobile phone by Nokia which comes with a DVB-H receiver so that you can watch TV on your cellphone. It is quite inexpensive and has most of the basic stuff you would want in a phone. It skimps out on Wi-Fi and GPS but everything else seems to have been left intact.

Design (3 out of 5)
The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition has dimensions of 101 x 48 x 14 mm and weighs about 113 gms. It is a compact phone with a nice slider design. The glossy black outer body looks really stylish and the build quality is also quite sturdy. The front face is covered by the 2.4 inch display and the DPad, the Call, End and the left and right select keys. The keypad slides out from under the display and is very usable. On the left of the display, there are the dedicated music playback keys. The right side has the volume rocker and the lock slider while the left side houses the microSD slot. On the top there is the charger slot, the microUSB port and the 3.5mm audio jack.
The Nokia 5330 has a 2.4 inch TFT display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and supports 16 M colors. The display quality is pretty good and offers good contrast and brightness levels. The sunlight legibility is also quite nice.
User Interface (3 out of 5)
The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition sports the latest version of the familiar S40 user interface - the 6th edition. It is very easy to use and has an active standby screen with shortcuts which allow easy access to your favorite apps.
It offers a rudimentary form of multitasking which allows you to keep some apps active. It also has a built in email client which can handle POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 enabled accounts. It has J2ME application support so you can use applications like Opera Mini, UCWeb etc with it. It has the standard phonebook, messaging and call log features like all other S40 phones.
Multimedia (3 out of 5)
The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition has a very basic gallery application which allows you to access your images and view them in landscape, portrait and full screen modes. It also allows you to zoom into the images. You can share your multimedia files with your friends using Ovi Share.
The music player application is quite good and has a nice interface. It supports album art and playlists and supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+, WAV and WMA file formats. The audio playback quality is very good, it can easily be marketed as a music oriented phone too. You can use your own headphones in the 3.5mm audio jack and also use a Bluetooth headset as the 5330 supports the A2DP profile.
It also has a video player which can play 3GP and MP4 videos. The video player offers basic play / pause / fast forward and rewind controls. The 5330 also has an FM radio with RDS.
Coming to the USP of the phone, the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition has a DVB-H broadcast receiver built in. It allows you to watch TV on your mobile phone. You can just open the Mobile TV app and scan for channels to watch them.
The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition also has a 3.2 MP camera with LED flash which can capture images at the resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. It has a usable camera interface which gives you limited control over the advanced settings. The image capture quality is average but that’s understandable considering its low price. It can also record QVGA video at 15 FPS but the quality is really bad.
Connectivity (2 out of 5)
It gives you basic connectivity options like GPRS, EDGE, 3G, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB but misses out on HSDPA and Wi-Fi. It also doesn’t have GPS. It also has a decent HTML browser but also comes with Opera Mini preinstalled. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition has excellent call reception quality with no issues.
The Verdict (3 out of 5)
The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition offers nothing spectacular, but at its price there are not many other options that can better it. It’s a decent deal if you want a simple phone that can make calls and send messages and if you are specifically interested in the Mobile TV feature.
