In-built Antenna and Call Quality

Although the days of external phone antennae are long gone, the fact remains that an unencumbered antenna has a better chance of connecting to a base station, whilst minimising the strain on the handset. The internal antenna on the Nokia 7705 Twist is near the top of the screen, therefore it is best to hold the phone by the lower edges for the best reception.

There are other environmental factors that affect call quality and reception, like metal structures. Metal affects the waves passing through the air, and therefore messes with the connection to a base station. Similarly large structures like buildings obstruct signals.

Funnily enough, the user can sometimes be the cause of weak signals. As there is no real way of knowing where exactly the base station is, with respect to the handset, chances are the user’s body could be blocking the connection. Turning around till a better reception is established, usually sorts out this issue.

Playing Music on the Twist

The Nokia 7705 Twist has a dedicated key for music. The user can store, manage and play all their favourite tracks using the easy media interface. Playing songs is fairly straightforward and intuitive, however, there is the option of playing music in the background as well.

When in the Music mode, start playing tracks as desired, and press the End/Power Off key to exit the player. The music will continue to play without turning off the player. Most functions of the phone are still accessible whilst the music is playing. To turn off the music, press the End/Power Off key once more. A message, “Stop playing music?” will be displayed. Clicking “Yes” will stop the musical playback.

Contacts Tips

In the event of an emergency, a person’s mobile phone becomes the number one tool for establishing identity and informing next of kin. Therefore the In Case of Emergency (ICE) protocol was established. Users were asked to store their emergency contact person under the contact name ICE to enable rescue teams to easily identify whom to call in the event of an emergency. The Nokia 7705 Twist allows a user to store three different numbers for this purpose.

Under the Contacts menu, there is an option for ‘In Case of Emergency’. The user can assign three different contacts to this list. The list is accessible even if the handset is locked. In addition to contact numbers, the user can also enter personal information under the same menu item.

On a more frivolous note, a user can assign custom light effects to various contacts. It was a short step to take from custom ringtones. The light effect settings can be found under the Settings menu in the Contacts application.

Nokia Tricks

Nokia phones are generally built in much the same way, right from the very beginning. This is perhaps to engender a comfort factor amongst users, so that upgrading phones does not put the user on the back foot. Because of this tendency, there are a number of Nokia tricks that work on most Nokia phones – and the Nokia 7705 Twist is no exception.

Some of the more popular Nokia numeric codes are as follows:

  • *#06# - Checking the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
  • *#7780# - Reset factory settings.
  • *#67705646# - This will clear the LCD display.
  • *#0000# - View software version.
  • *#2820# - Bluetooth device address.
  • *#92702689# - Displays a secret menu with the following options: 1. Displays Serial Number; 2. Displays the Month and Year of Manufacture; 3. Displays (if there) the date where the phone was purchased (MMYY); 4. Displays the date of the last repair; 5. Shows life timer of phone (time passed since last start).
  • *#3370# - Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR) activation: increases signal strength. In case GPRS service is not responding or too slow, this fix will also boost reception. However, the phone’s battery will drain faster.
  • *#3370* - (EFR) deactivation.
  • *#4720# - Half Rate Codec activation.
  • *#4720* - Half Rate Codec deactivation.
