Preview of the Samsung Wave S5750: First Look at the Fifth Bada OS Phone
Samsung’s mobile strategy this year seems to be throwing everything it has on the wall, and watching what sticks. It has already invested in two major platforms - Bada and Android - and will soon launch Windows Phone 7 devices. In the high end smartphone market, it seems to be trying out Android and Windows Phone 7, while in the budget segment it is launching devices on its own platform - Bada.
It has already announced multiple Bada based devices like the Samsung Wave S8500, Wave S5250, Wave 2 Pro S5330 and more recently, the Samsung Wave II S8530.
It also announced one more device, the fifth in the range, the Samsung Wave S5750 or the Wave 575. It is very similar to the Wave S5250 but also offers 3G HSDPA which the latter doesn’t.
Design
The Samsung Wave S5750 has a standard candybar design and is very compact with dimensions of just 109.5 x 55 x 11.9 mm. It is quite light with a weight of 100 gms and is easily pocketable. The body is composed mostly of plastic.
It has a 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. Below the display, there are the D pad, and the Call and the End keys.
User Interface
The Samsung Wave 575 has pretty average hardware specs, which is expected in a budget phone. It runs the new Bada OS 1.1 with the TouchWiz UI 3.0. The Bada OS is optimized for touchscreen phones but isn’t as mature as Android or iOS yet. Not many third party apps or games are available for it yet.
It offers the Samsung Dolphin browser and social network integration.
Multimedia
The Samsung Wave S5750 is an average performer in terms of multimedia. It has just a 3.2 MP camera with a maximum image capture resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. It lacks both autofocus and flash.
It can play MP3, WAV and eAAC audio files and 3GP, MP4 and H.264 videos. It also has a stereo FM radio with RDS.
Connectivity
The Samsung Wave 575 sports all the standard connectivity options - GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP as well as microUSB 2.0 connectivity.
It also has a GPS transceiver with A-GPS support. It is powered by a standard Li-ion battery rated at 1200 mAh.
Conclusion
The Samsung Wave S5750 is a nice touchscreen smartphone option for those on a budget. It should be launched soon, by the end of 2010. If, however, you can spend more, you should check out the list of the Top 10 Best Android smartphones. Even a budget Android phone would be a good idea.
