Samsung Galaxy Beam Preview

The Samsung Galaxy S is one of the best Android smartphones available. Samsung released it worldwide a few days back. The new Samsung Galaxy Beam is supposed to be even better, it has better hardware specs and comes with an 8 MP camera and a 1800 mAh battery. It is the first Android phone with a projector; it has a pico projector built into the phone which you can use for office presentations, hence the name: Galaxy Beam.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Beam is much bulkier than the Samsung Galaxy S. The increase can be attributed to the bigger battery, the addition of a pico projector and the 8 MP camera. It has dimensions of 123 x 59.8 x 14.9 mm and weighs 155 gms. It is still easily pocketable. The design is pretty good and the build quality is solid.

It sports a 3.7 inch Super AMOLED display, the same kind as in the Galaxy S but a bit smaller. The display quality is stunning with excellent contrast and very high brightness levels. It is much better than standard AMOLED displays.

User Interface

The Samsung Galaxy Beam will come with Android 2.1 Eclair installed and the TouchWiz 3.0 UI on top of it. It is exactly the same as in the Galaxy S. It will also have Android Market installed so that you can download your favorite apps. It will most probably get an upgrade to Android 2.2 Froyo. It will presumably have the same 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and 512 MB RAM as the Galaxy S. It will have partitioned internal memory: 4 GB + 2 GB + 1 GB + 16 GB.

Multimedia

It has a 8.0 MP camera with autofocus and flash which can capture 720p video at 30 FPS. It will also have a secondary VGA camera in the front for video calls. It will come with the Layar Augmented Reality browser preinstalled.

The video player will be able to handle the following formats: MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV, DivX and Xvid. The music player can play MP3, WMA, AAC and eAAC+. It will also have an FM Radio with RDS. It also has TV out so you can view your multimedia files on your TV. It also has a pico projector built in which you can use to display presentations in your office.

Connectivity

It will have everything the Galaxy S had when it comes to connectivity options: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with DLNA, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP. It will have wireless Internet tethering. It also has a built in GPS transceiver with A-GPS.

It is powered by a 1800 mAh battery which has a rated talktime of about 7 hrs.
