Monthly Plans

As mentioned earlier, all plans come with unlimited messaging and web with varying degrees of talk time and there are no binding contracts. You can switch from one plan to another or cancel the service at any time. For $25 a month you get 300 any time minutes, for $40 a month you get 1200 any time minutes and for $60 a month you get unlimited talk time. If you use a BlackBerry you add an additional $10 a month to your plan’s cost.

As of this writing (July 2010) Virgin Mobile offers four phones with the Beyond Talk service. These are the LG Rumor2 and Rumor Touch, the Kyocera Loft and the BlackBerry Curve. The phones range in price from about $70 to $150.

Pay-as-you-Go Plans

Virgin Mobile has a prepaid pay-as-you-go service called payLo. The service has two main plans: a 400-minute plan for which you pay $20 every 30 days, and a basic rate plan for which you pay at least $20 every 90 days. For the 400-minute plan, calls cost 5 cents a minute and for the basic plan, they cost 20 cents a minute. Text messaging, picture messaging and web use incur additional charges as follows: text messaging (15 cents per message), picture messaging (25 cents per message) and web use ($1.50 per MB per day). You can also check your account balance up to five times for free each day to keep track of your phone usage.

There are currently (as of July 2010) four phones offered with Virgin Mobile’s pay-as-you-go plans. These are the Kyocera Jax and TNT, the LG Flare and Samsung M340. They range in price from about $10 to $40.
