Motorola has been one of the few companies to have embraced Android completely. They ditched development on all their former product lines and went ahead with Android, all engines blazing. They have created some of the best Android smartphones and the current king of the Android realm is the Motorola Droid X.

In this article, I will take you through all the Android smartphones by Motorola and give you a brief overview of all of them.

Motorola Droid X

The Motorola Droid X is one of the best Android phones out there. It has excellent hardware specifications: It is powered by a 1 GHz OMAP processor, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB internal memory and support for up to 32 GB memory cards. It has a 4.3 inch LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels and runs on Android 2.1 with the MotoBLUR UI. It should get the Android 2.2 upgrade soon. It comes with a Swype text input system and an 8 MP camera with autofocus, LED flash and 720p video recording at 30 FPS. Other features include GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0, FM Radio, GPS, HDMI out etc.

Motorola Droid 2 / Motorola Milestone XT720

The Motorola Droid 2 is the second in command in the Motorola Droid army. It is also known as the Motorola Milestone XT720 and comes with excellent specifications: It has a 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. It has an ARM Cortex A8 720 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 150 MB internal memory and supports up to 32 GB microSD cards.

It has an 8 MP camera with autofocus and Xenon flash and features like geotagging, face detection, smile detection etc. It can also record 720p video at 24 FPS. It runs on Android 2.1 too but can be upgraded to Android 2.2 probably. It also has the regular features: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g with DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0, FM Radio, GPS etc.

Motorola Droid / Motorola Milestone

The Motorola Droid was Motorola’s first Android hit and probably its most successful to date. It brought a bleeding Motorola to near profitability and gave rise to a whole Droid line of phones, including the above two: Droid X and the Droid 2, as well as the HTC Droid Eris.

It was the best Android phone at the time of its launch, but is now outdated. It had a 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. It runs on Android 2.1 Eclair and has some great hardware: It has a ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 133 MB internal memory, 32 GB microSD card support. It also comes with a 5 MP camera which has autofocus and a dual LED flash. It comes with a QWERTY keyboard and supports all the connectivity options: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0, FM Radio, GPS etc.

Motorola Dext / Motorola Cliq

The Motorola Dext is one of the earlier Android smartphones, probably Motorola’s first. It was a basic Android smartphone with good hardware specifications. It came with a 3.1 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and a QWERTY keyboard. It runs on Android 1.5 and looks unlikely to receive an OS upgrade. It has a 528 MHz Qualcomm processor, 256 MB RAM and 1 GB internal memory with 32GB microSD card support. It also has a 5 MP camera with autofocus which can record QVGA video at 24 FPS. It also has the basic connectivity options: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0 and GPS. I wouldn’t recommend buying it right now.

Motorola Backflip

The Motorola Backflip is one of the newest Android phones by Motorola and was launched recently. It sports a cool design and specifications similar to the Motorola Dext. It has a 3.1 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and a QWERTY keyboard which flips backward. It runs on Android 1.5 but will most probably receive the Android 2.1 upgrade. It has a 528 MHz Qualcomm processor, 256 MB RAM with 32GB microSD card support. It also has a 5 MP camera with autofocus and a LED flash and can record CIF video at 30 FPS. It also comes with the basics: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0 and GPS. Of the Dext and the Backflip, the Backflip is certainly a better deal.

Motorola Flipout

The Motorola Flipout is a stylish smartphone by Motorola which runs on Android 2.1. It has an unconventional design with a square 2.8 inch display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and a rotating QWERTY keyboard. It has a OMAP 600 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 150 MB internal memory with 32 GB microSD support and comes with the standard connectivity options: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0 and GPS. It also has a 3.15 MP camera.

Motorola Charm

The Motorola Charm is a fairly nice QWERTY candybar messaging phone which is aimed at social networking users. It has everything you would expect in a basic smartphone: GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, MicroUSB 2.0 and GPS. It has a 3.15 MP camera and runs on Android 2.1. It is also priced low to attract teenagers and college students.
