Dual Core Battle

Both the LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix 4G were announced early in 2011, and both are set to be released among the first batch of smartphones with dual core processors. Motorola has become well known for their high quality, high end smartphones, while LG has yet to truly prove itself in the high end market. LG has targeted more devices towards the entry level and mid market customers with smartphones such as the LG Optimus T, but are slowly beginning to aim higher with smartphones such as the LG Optimus 2X, LG Optimus 3D and the LG Revolution.

In this LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle, the two newly announced smartphones with dual core processors are reviewed. Both are targeted towards the same audience and both have some amazing specifications. In this battle of dual core smartphones, will Motorola’s status as a powerful competitor in the smartphone market be challenged by LG?

Design and Display

LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G

In the design and display battle between the LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix 4G, there are some extremely similar characteristics. Both are very well designed and are attractive smartphones. In addition both have 4 inch displays that are colorful and vibrant, though they may not utilize AMOLED technology like the Samsung Continuum or Dell Venue, the display still comes off very bright. The LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G, in the display department, does have one small difference, the Atrix 4G has qHD. This gives the Motorola Atrix 4G the ability to display 960x540 pixels, giving it about an extra row of icons worth of screen space.

Though the LG Optimus 2X is nicely designed and the display is bright and vibrant, it’s really hard for it to compete against the qHD display of the Motorola Atrix 4G. Not many smartphones would be able to compete in the display department against the Motorola Atrix 4G. In the design and display arena of the LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle, the Atrix 4G comes out ahead with its qHD display.

Winner: Motorola Atrix 4G

Hardware and Software

Both the LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix 4G pack a punch with dual core nVidia Tegra 2 processors clocking in at 1 GHz each. This allows for some serious multitasking on both smartphones. One thing to note, however, is that while the LG Optimus 2X runs with 512 MB of RAM, the Motorola Atrix 4G clocks in at 1 GHz of RAM, giving the Atrix 4G quite the edge. Also on the hardware side, the Atrix 4G allocates 16 GB of space for internal storage with a microSD slot that allows up to 32 GB of more storage. The Optimus 2X caps at 8 GB of internal storage and also has a microSD slot that allows up to 32 GB of more storage. Once again, the Atrix 4G comes out slightly ahead.

On the software front of the LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle, it seems pretty even. Like most other recently announced smartphones such as the HTC Thunderbolt, both the Optimus 2X and Atrix 4G come with Android 2.2. It’s disappointing news for both smartphones as many would hope that the newer generation of smartphones would come out with Android 2.3. Though the software comes out as a draw, the hardware differences clearly give the Motorola Atrix 4G the win in the hardware and software arena.

Winner: Motorola Atrix 4G

Camera

In previous battles, such as the HTC Thunderbolt vs. Motorola Droid Bionic, user interfaces

LG Optimus 2X - 8 Megapixel Camera

were compared. However, with the user interfaces being so similar to each other, as they both run Android, it’s truly hard to compare the two. In the LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle, a new arena has been chosen, the camera. Both pack impressive cameras but which one comes out ahead?

The Motorola Atrix 4G comes with the standard 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus and the ability to record 720p HD video. Sounds impressive, and mimics many other high end smartphones such as the Samsung Epic 4G. It also comes with a front facing camera for video chatting, which is a huge plus for a 4G smartphone. There have been some errors with other 4G smartphones such as the HTC G2 which failed to add one.

The LG Optimus 2X, however, makes the Atrix 4G’s impressive camera look weak. The Optimus 2X packs an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, autofocus and the ability to record 1080p HD video. That’s quite an impressive feat, and it allows the LG Optimus 2X to compete with camcorders rather than smartphones. It also comes with a front facing camera, matching the Motorola Atrix 4G in that department. With the powerful 8 megapixel camera in the back, the LG Optimus 2X comes back swinging in the camera arena.

Winner: LG Optimus 2X

Features

The score is currently two to one with the LG Optimus 2X lagging behind the Motorola Atrix 4G. The last arena, the features arena, may be where the LG Optimus 2X comes back to tie or where the Motorola Atrix 4G destroys the competition. Simply put, there’s no real way for the LG Optimus 2X to win in the features arena of the LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle. While the LG Optimus 2X has an impressive camera, there’s really no other smartphone specific features that make the Optimus 2X stand out.

The Motorola Atrix 4G on the other hand, has pushed to become an industry changing smartphone. One of the biggest selling points is its ability to connect to a laptop dock, allowing the smartphone to power a whole laptop. In addition, it can be hooked up to an HD dock, allowing it to be used as a media center of sorts. Motorola has done an amazing job making the Atrix 4G more than just a smartphone. It truly has become a game changer in the smartphone industry. The Motorola Atrix 4G the perfect smartphone for business consumers, especially those who travel often.

The ability to combine a smartphone with a laptop and what amounts to a portable media dock gives the Motorola Atrix 4G a powerful advantage over most smartphones. And in the features arena of the LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle, this is no different, the Atrix 4G wins hands down.

Winner: Motorola Atrix 4G

The Verdict

Atrix Laptop

When the dust settles and the LG Optimus 2X vs. Motorola Atrix 4G battle ends, the Atrix 4G stands tall. It’s not as close a battle as the Samsung Fascinate vs. Samsung Continuum. The Atrix 4G has been deemed as an “industry changing” smartphone, and it lives up to its name. While the LG Optimus 2X is an extremely impressive smartphone, it does not have what it takes to compete against the powerful Atrix 4G. This does not mean, however, that the LG Optimus 2X is a smartphone to be laughed at. For those who are disinterested in having a laptop and media center dock, the LG Optimus 2X is still a solid choice, but in this battle the Atrix 4G just flat out beats out the competition.
