LG has always been one of the laggards in the smartphone industry. None of its mobile products have been truly innovative or have
been spectacular hits, maybe with a few exceptions.
With Android, LG is trying to reinvent itself as a budget smartphone brand, but with heavyweights like Samsung, HTC and Motorola already fighting it out, the road to success will not be an easy one for LG.
It has released a few Android smartphones in the past, and is now planning to launch an entire series of budget Android smartphones - Optimus. The new LG Optimus One will be one of the first in the series.
It has decent hardware specifications and should compete with the likes of the HTC Wildfire, Samsung Galaxy 3 and some of the best budget Android smartphones out there.
The LG Optimus One P500 has a very stylish design and is a very compact phone. It will be a Google branded phone and has nice rounded edges with dimensions of 113.5 x 59 x 13.3 mm and a weight of 130 gms.
It has a 3.2 inch TFT touchscreen display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, the standard Android resolution. Below the display, there are the usual four keys - Menu, Home, Back and Search.
Hardware and OS
This first LG Optimus smartphone may be one of the best in its price range, when it comes to hardware specifications and OS. It runs the latest version of the Android OS - Android 2.2 Froyo. It is powered by a 600 MHz ARM processor and will likely come with 256 MB RAM. It has 170 MB internal memory and supports microSD cards up to 32 GB. It includes support for the Android Market, which now houses over 250,000 applications.
The resolution is the minimum required to use all Android applications, it’s great that LG didn’t go with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution on the Optimus One.
Multimedia
The LG Optimus One isn’t very well equipped in terms of multimedia features. It has a basic 3.15 MP camera with an image capture resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and comes with autofocus. It can handle VGA video recording only.
It comes with a stereo FM radio with RDS and can play DivX, XviD, MP4 and H.264 encoded videos, which is quite good. It can handle the following audio formats - MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, eAAC+.
Connectivity
The Optimus One comes with all the basic connectivity options you would expect from a budget Android smartphone - GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0.
It also has a GPS transceiver with A-GPS support. The Optimus One is powered by a 1500 mAh Li-ion battery which has a rated talk time of about 8 hours.
Conclusion
The LG Optimus One P500 seems like a very good budget option for all Android fans. It has a nice display, good hardware and the latest OS version installed.
