Are you having trouble motivating yourself to write? For many of us professional writers, writing often helps us improve and make it a habit. iPhone owners have a simple application in WriteChain that can help them set goals, track the number of words they write and view the running total.

The application has three main screens. The home screen lets you enter how many words you wrote for the day. The Sessions screen shows all the sessions you’ve done to date with the newest one appearing first. You can also add notes about what you have to say about writing X number of words for the day.

Then finally the preferences page is where you set your writing goals. How many words will you write each day? How many days can you go without breaking the chain? Breaking the chain means skipping writing sessions.

For example, if you put zero for number of days that you can go without breaking the chain, then it means you will write every single day. Enter one and you can skip a day without breaking the chain. Each time you keep the chain going, the longer your links get. It’s like getting a star for the day and motivates you to stick with the program.

If you break the chain, the sky won’t fall and iPhone won’t crash. Instead, it’ll motivate you to do better next time and beat your previous score. Maybe you need to adjust your goals, but don’t make them too easy.

It’s OK not to enter the information every day. People forget. You can enter the word count for a previous day and change the date to reflect an earlier date. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Sessions.
  2. Tap +.
  3. Tap today’s date.
  4. Change the date and time.
  5. Tap Done to return to “Edit Session” screen.
  6. Enter the number of words.
  7. Tap outside of the box.
  8. Tap Save.

WriteChain is a very easy to use program and motivator. What will excite you is seeing the running total of words. Those working on books will love seeing how much closer they are reaching the book’s word count. WriteChain sells for $0.99 in the iTunes Store. You can also learn more about the app on the developer’s Web site.

The unedited version of this article has 421 words. Time to go write another 79 words to reach the daily goal and add another link to the chain.
