Soundboard apps for the iPhone are big business. Whether you use them for making music or simply for making your friends laugh, there are hundreds to choose from. Many of them are similar in the sounds they provide, so it can be difficult to decide which ones to download. As a fan of soundboards, I have spent quite a lot of time testing them out to discover the great ones from the disappointing ones. Here is a look at the top ten.

World of Sounds Lite (Free)

This basic soundboard holds six different categories

. The categories are animals, people, miscellaneous, funny, horror and weapons. There are nine different sounds in each category – except for Horror, which only has six. The sound quality is excellent, and very realistic too. You may find that on first touch it seems like some of the sounds don’t work. It isn’t broken, you just need to hold your finger on it for a little longer. Once you have got used to that, it is a fun little iPhone app that will amuse you for a long time.

iDaft 2 (Free)

Daft Punk are well known for their electronic beats, so they created iDaft 2 for the iPhone, allowing you to re-create their sound i

n the comfort of your own home. The menu screen gives two different options. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” has 16 different phrases, spoken in an electronic voice. Some of the sayings include, “work it,” “make it,” and “do it.” You can also change the pitch of the voice, and play a backing beat to make your own music. The “Technologic” option in the main menu is similar, but there are 64 phrases to choose from.

You don’t have to be a fan of Daft Punk to enjoy this soundboard. I am not a fan, but iDaft kept me entertained for over an hour on my first play, and I still love it.

Fun Sounds – Fun Sound Effects Boards (Free)

Fun Sounds

Fans of childish humor will really get a kick out of this soundboard! There are eleven different categories including burps, farts and whistles! Although those will give you a giggle, the best category is comedy. Every moment of your life can have added sound effects such as canned laughter or a drum roll! It really is great value, and if you love it, you can upgrade to the pro version for $0.99.

iKnow Jamaican (Free)

This is genuinely one of the funniest iPhone soundboards ever made. It is billed as being both a soundboard and a translator, so you are

iKnow Jamaican

getting a two for one deal. iknow Jamaican begins with a brief introduction explaining that it is just for fun, and not to be taken seriously just in case anyone is offended by it. Once you get past that, you are presented with a scroll down page. Down one side there are American men, on the other, Jamaican men. Inbetween the two there is a long list of every day phrases such as “Hello, how are you?” When you click on the American man, the phrase is spoken in perfect English. When you click on the Jamaican man, the phrase translates to “Whatta gwan,” and is spoken with a strong Jamaican accent. You never quite know how each phrase will translate, but it is hilarious when you hear it!

80’s Arcade Game Soundboard ($0.99)

80’s Arcade Game Soundboard

Retro toys and games are always popular, so this app is sure to be a hit with fans of the 80s. The soundboard holds an array of music and sayings from some of the best loved arcade games of the era. Some of the sounds that will take you back in time are from Paperboy, Asteroids, Congo Bongo and Gauntlet. The layout of the menu is very straightforward. It is laid out in the shape of an arcade game, and all you have to do is scroll up and down the screen to find the sound you want to play.

Remote Sound Box (Free)

This is a soundboard with a difference. Just like the others, it has a selection of sound categories, but this one has an extra level of fun

Remote Sound Box

because you can also record your own sounds too! If you have the talent to make weird and wonderful noises, all you need to do is press the “record” button and save. You can also set the sounds to play after a delay of up to five minutes. It’s quite useful if you want to give someone a scare by timing a scream to blare out of your iPhone!

Annoying Orange ($0.99)

Annoying Orange

The Annoying Orange is the main character from the hugely popular web show of the same name. The soundboard is equally as annoying as the name suggests, but you can’t help but laugh at it. There are many popular phrases from the web series included with the app, and a picture of the slightly sinister looking orange is shown in the background. Even if you aren’t familiar with the character, it is still an enjoyable app and the quality of the sounds is second to none.

Sound Bound 360 (Free)

Do you want to hear some bizarre things? If so, look no further than Sound Bound 360. Instead of the usual animal sounds you would

80’s Arcade Game Soundboard

normally find on a soundboard, this one has 20 numbered buttons and no descriptions until you press one of them. Ranging from short and unusual phrases to truly weird mini stories, there is nothing else quite like this!

3D Talking Soundboard (Free)

3D Talking Soundboard

For entertainment with a little visual stimulation, the 3D Talking Soundboard is ideal! It features a slightly odd looking boy whose ears stretch randomly while he waits for you to pick a sound. The boy reacts depending on the sound you choose. For example, if you press the siren, his eyes widen and his mouth opens in surprise! You can also record your own sounds, so it looks like he is speaking for you. Although some of the sounds are similar to the ones in the other apps, this one provides something a little bit different as you can actually see reactions from the 3D character on the screen.

Custom Soundboard (Free)

The Custom Soundboard app is the only soundboard you will ever need. Although it looks complicated when you first get into it, it is very

Custom Soundboard

simple once you understand the concept. Basically, it is empty when you download it, but on the menu screen, there are five options along the bottom. One of them is “download,” and this is where you can custom make your own soundboard. Instead of having a bunch of sounds you don’t want, you can select and download your favorites! You then organize them into categories in the Manager menu, then play them whenever you want. You can also record your own sounds, and change the background to different colors and patterns. There aren’t many free apps which give you so much variety, which is why it stands out as being one of the best.

The Best of the Best

If there was just one that I had to recommend, it would definitely be the Custom Soundboard, because it is free and there is so much you can do with it. Sound Bound 360 is a close second, due to it being so very unusual!

Finding a soundboard that is both easy to use and high quality is difficult because there are so many options available. I have encountered some terrible ones, and it isn’t just the free apps that are disappointing. In fact, some of the best ones are cost free, so even if they aren’t exactly right for you, you can delete them without any worries about wasting money.
