T-Mobile HTC G2 Preview

The HTC Desire Z, also more simply known as the HTC G2, is the long awaited and highly anticipated follow up phone to the T-Mobile HTC G1. The G1 was the original Google phone, unleashing the power of Android onto the world. T-Mobile unfortunately did not follow up or capture the market, and instead their competitors, especially Verizon, have taken the Google Android OS and brought it to a new level. Up against the release of the Droid series of phones from Verizon, T-Mobile hopes to reclaim their rights as the leading Android phone source. The HTC G2 is their first step in this direction.

HTC G2 Specifications

The exact current specifications of the HTC G2 are unknown. What is rumored is that it will have an 800 MHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor, a 3.7 inch Active Matrix OLED screen, a 5 megapixel camera and the ability to be a mobile hotspot. This information is based upon leaks from Wal Mart. What has been confirmed is that the phone will have a slide out landscape QWERTY keyboard and will be able to utilize T-Mobile’s newly rolled out HSPA+ network.

What Is Expected of the HTC G2?

The T-Mobile HTC G2 is expected to be the first T-Mobile phone to be released that will

utilize the full power of HSPA+. This means blazing fast speeds up to 21 Mbps, well beyond the current 4G technology that T-Mobile competitors are planning to utilize. Unlike other smartphones on T-Mobile, the HTC G2 will be able to go beyond the regular 3G range and should have the fastest speeds available in the current market.

Processor wise though, T-Mobile has stated that it has the fastest processor, the HTC G2 has been spotted as having an 800 MHz Scorpion processor, which is not as powerful as the 1 GHz Snapdragon or Hummingbird processors that reside on other Android powered devices such as the AT&T Captivate and the Motorola Droid.

It has been stated that the T-Mobile HTC G2 will have Android 2.2 (Froyo) meaning the phone will be capable of playing Adobe Flash and will have Flash Player 10.1 available.

From the design perspective, like its predecessor, the HTC G1, the G2 will also have a slide out QWERTY keyboard. There are currently conflicting reports on whether the phone will have HTC’s Sense UI as an overlay on top of the Android OS. There is a high likelihood that the G2, like its predecessor may come with a vanilla Android installation, which many users will rejoice about.

The T-Mobile HTC G2 has a rumored release date of September 29th for $199 on contract and $499 without a contract, which is on a par with its competitors.

The T-Mobile HTC G2 may very well be the phone that takes T-Mobile to the next level in network speed for smartphones. Though it doesn’t look to be the next big thing when it comes to hardware or OS, the network speed may be the biggest selling point with the HTC G2. T-Mobile fumbled quite a bit with the release of the original G1 and didn’t capitalize on a product that was in its infancy with room to grow. The HTC G2 may not be the crowning achievement that makes people think T-Mobile when they hear Android, but it will be a step in the right direction for the last place carrier.
