With the ever-rising environmental challenges, it’s good to see that many companies are trying to ‘go green’ and prove themselves environmentally conscious by introducing products that are more environmentally sustainable.

When we talk about green mobile phones, we’re talking about devices which are safe for our environment. An ‘eco-friendly’ mobile phone is characterized by various green elements like the ability to charge the battery from sunlight, being manufactured using recycled material and biodegradability. Such mobile phones still incorporate most of the standard mobile phone features.

Below are the top 10 eco-friendly mobile phones according to their determined eco-rating.

1. Sony Ericsson Elm GreenHeart


Released in the second quarter of 2010 this eco-friendly mobile phone has established its name by receiving the title of most eco-friendly mobile phone from O2. It maintains the highest eco rating of 4.3 out of 5 and a customer rating of above 4. The phone is a part of Sony Ericsson’s GreenHeart project which aims to build hand-sets out of recycled bottles. The eco-friendly features of the phone include the use of recycled plastics, electronic manual on the phone, no hazardous chemicals, minimized packaging and the use of waterborne paint. Other features include excellent sound quality with Noise Shield hands-free, high speed social network access, 280 MB of internal memory plus MicroSD memory card support up to 16 GB, GPS navigation, 5.0 megapixel camera, and Wi-Fi support.

2. Nokia 6700 Slide

Two models of this version of Nokia handset maintain an eco-rating of 4 out of 5. The Nokia 6700 Slide Silver and the Nokia 6700 Slide Pink make use of the safest paints for their casing. The new Nokia 6700 Slide takes part in the save-the-planet movement with eco-friendly features starting with its power saving mode. This uses its ambient light sensor to turn off or dim the LCD backlight depending on lighting conditions or turn it off automatically when not in use. It also alerts users to unplug an energy-efficient AC battery charger when charging is done. The phone features HSDPA/HSUPA, quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE radio, integrated messaging and internet browsing that supports video streaming, microSD slot for up to 16 GB of external memory and 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens.

3. Nokia C7-00

Being the first smartphone to use bio-paints, Nokia C7 maintains an eco-rating of 4 out of 5. The phone is a result of Nokia’s joint venture with mobile operator Telefonica, named ‘Green Customer Experience’, to offer consumers an eco-friendly version. The green features of the phone include recycled cardboard boxes, apps to help reduce carbon footprint further, a high energy charger to reduce charging time, and minimum packaging. The phone also has an energy-efficient AMOLED screen. Other features include full-touch glass display, integrated social networks, 8 megapixel camera, GPS navigation, and it supports the Symbian OS.

4. Nokia 1800


Released in the summer of 2010, the Nokia 1800 is a mobile phone that has got an eco rating of 4 out of 5. The phone bears a label of ‘Phone to send and receive calls. Nothing more’ and hence has got a simple design and a few necessary features only. The environmentally friendly features of the Nokia 1800 include power save mode, unplug charger reminder, no use of nickel on the phone surface, recyclable box, minimum poaching and a user manual printed in black-and-white. Other features include basic call and messaging features plus FM radio.

5. Samsung Wave (GT-S8500)

Released in April 2010, this phone is rated 4 out of 5 for its eco-friendliness. The phone is efficient in terms of power consumption and hence is listed as an eco-friendly phone. Other features include AMOLED screen, 1 GHz processor, Wi-Fi 802.11n, BADA OS, Bluetooth 3.0, MicroSD memory card support up to 32 GB, and a 5 megapixel camera.

6. Sony Ericsson Zylo


The Zylo is a new member of the Sony Ericsson walkman phone family but is eco-friendly unlike the other family members. According to O2’s eco-rating of mobile phones, the Zylo grabs second place along with the Samsung Wave and others in terms of eco-friendliness. The phone is rated 4 out of 5 and comes in an eco-box along with an energy-efficient charger. The Zylo is made of bio-plastics and features a 3.2 megapixel camera, up to 16GB MicroSD memory card support, and 2G/3G connectivity.

7. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini & Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro


Both these versions of Xperia X10 are rated 4 out of 5 in their eco-friendliness. The phones are completely made with plastic and don’t include any type of metal. Other features include a 5 megapixel camera, 2G/3G connectivity, and 128 MB memory with MicroSD memory card support up to 32 GB. The pro version is the same as the other except for a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

8. Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro


Released in the first quarter of 2010, the Vivaz pro has been listed in the top ten eco-friendly mobiles with an eco-rating of 3.9 out of 5. Like the other top Sony Ericsson eco-friendly mobile phones the Vivaz Pro is also completely made of plastic. Other features include a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 5.1 megapixel camera, 250 MB built-in memory with up to 8GB of MicroSD memory card support and AGPS.

9. Nokia E5


With the recent release of the Nokia E5, Nokia has expanded its family of eco-friendly mobile phones impressively for the phone has recently been listed in the top ten environmentally friendly mobile phones, with a rating of 3.9 out of 5. The eco-friendly features of the phone include Power Save mode, ambient light sensor, unplug charger reminder, Eco zone app via Ovi store, free of PVC, nickel free on the product surface and brominated and chlorinated compounds/brominated compounds and chlorinated flame retardants, antimony trioxide, recyclable and recycled packaging, black and white printing, and eco tips on ‘Green Page’. Other features include up to 256 MB built-in memory with MicroSD memory card slot expandable up to 32 GB, AGPS, 5 megapixel camera, and FM radio.

10. Sony Ericsson Hazel GreenHeart

Released with the Sony Ericsson Elm, the Hazel is a phone that is a part of the Sony Ericsson GreenHeart series. The phone is also made of recycled plastics like the Elm and is free of any of the chemical hazards posed by nickel, lead and mercury usage in many mobile phones. Other features include 280 MB of built-in memory expandable up to 16 GB, GPRS, WLAN support, built-in social networking and IM, FM radio and a 5 megapixel camera.
