BlackBerry Bold 2 vs BlackBerry Bold 3 Comparison
Is the BlackBerry Bold 3 any different from the Bold 2?
It would seem that RIM has come up with a new Bold and is calling it the BlackBerry Bold 9650 or the Bold 3, released in July 2010. The previously released Bold 9700 or Bold 2 and the 9650 both work well on a 2G network with regard to HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access), but there is a slight difference when it comes to 3G – the 9700 has HSDPA 850/1900/2100 while the 9650 only has HSDPA 2100.
Design and Specs
These phones have a slight difference in dimension and weight as well. The 9700 is 109x60x14mm and weighs 122g, while the 9650 is 112x62x14mm and weighs 136g. Many people have concluded that the 9650 has taken a step back in design as it resembles the previously released BlackBerry Tour. In terms of display, sound, data, camera, and features, everything is virtually identical.
Features
Both BlackBerry Bold cell phones are equipped with the same features. Both are equipped with Wi-Fi, have GPS and are engineered to work on a 3G Network. The BlackBerry 9650 or Bold 3, however, is supported by a few more carriers than the Bold 2.
User Interface
As with most other things in this BlackBerry Bold 2 vs BlackBerry 3 comparison, the user interface can be expected to be the same for both BlackBerry Bold cell phones. This can be seen as a plus for “upgraders”, because they would not need to become accustomed to new icons or become frustrated searching for the features that they normally use.
Performance
The only difference really seen between the Bold 2 and 3 is the capacity of the card slot for memory where the 9650 can store up to 32GB while the 9700 can only store up to 16GB. In addition, the internal memory for the 9700 is only 256MB, while for the 9650 it is 512MB. When it comes to the battery the BlackBerry Bold 2 (9700) actually offers about an extra hour of talk time, 4 days standby and 20 hours music play more than the newer Bold 3 (9650), how is that for a draw back?
Conclusion
What have I learned from this BlackBerry Bold 2 vs BlackBerry Bold 3 analysis? The real question here is: why upgrade something if it’s virtually the same in terms of specs, but heavier instead of lighter (more like the the BlackBerry Tour in terms of shape, size and weight)? Well, I guess it’s for those people who really love what the Bold 2 had to offer but wished that it contained more memory. If that is the case, then the Bold 2 BlackBerry users’ prayers have been answered, as long as they are willing to shell out some more dough for a memory upgrade in a new device.
In essence, if you need a Bold 2 with more memory, then get a Bold 3 also known as the BlackBerry 9650.
