Flash, developed by Adobe, is basically a tool used for incorporation of animation and sounds into a web page. The most striking feature of Flash that makes it a preferred mode in web design work is its ability to scale graphics to any size without compromising quality and clarity.

The basic task of how to make an e-card using flash involves creating an SWF flash format file using all the ingredients that go into a e-card.

There are many ways to create an SWF flash file. The easiest way to do so is first create PowerPoint slides and then convert the slides to Flash using the PPT2Flash add-on application.

Creation of SWF Flash File

The steps to create a Flash File using PowerPoint are as follows:

1. Install the PPT2Flash application.

The PPT2Flash add-on application for MS-Power Point automatically converts PowerPoint slides into a flash file.

2. Add the ingredients for the e-card as Power Point slides.

Create PowerPoint slides for the images, graphics, logos, sounds, and movies that go into the e-card.

  • Add text directly to the PowerPoint Slides.
  • Insert pictures, logos or graphics by using the Insert -> Picture option from the PowerPoint toolbar.
  • Insert videos and music by using the Insert -> Movie and Sound option from the PowerPoint toolbar.
  • Record your own greetings and insert them by using Insert -> Sound -> Record Sound from the PowerPoint toolbar.

Installing PP2Flash adds the option PPT2Flash in the PowerPoint menu. This menu has options to

  • insert an already created flash file into the new flash e-card
  • record or import audio and sounds
  • modify the structure of each slide as required

Create the PowerPoint slides in the same order as the required sequence of the flash file.

3. Convert PowerPoint Slide to Flash

To convert the PowerPoint Slide Slow to Flash, go to the PPT2Flash Professional option in the PowerPoint Toolbar, and click the “Publish as Flash” option. This creates a SWF Flash file automatically.

The “Publish to Flash” option under the PPT2Flash option under the toolbar has options to:

  1. Save the SWF file to the hard disk.
  2. Save the SWF file as a macromedia file.
  3. Send the converted SWF file directly as an email without saving to the computer hard disk.

Sharing the SWF Flash File as an e-Card

The major step is sharing the created SWF flash file as an e-card. This is possible through many ways:

  1. Upload the SWF file to a web hosting space or any free online storage service such as Box.net (https://www.box.net), and send the URL of the stored location to the recipient of the card.
  2. Attach the Flash file directly to Email and send it to the recipient as an e-card.
  3. Embed the flash file in the browser by opening the HTML of the web page and inserting the following code:

Here, filename.swf refers to the name of the created flash e-card. If the file is not stored in the same location as the web page code, the full path is to be specified.

There are many websites that allow for free e cards, but developing one’s own flash e-card not only adds a personal touch to the greeting but also makes for a good hobby or profession, and gives a feeling of accomplishment.
