What is DotNetNuke?

DotNetNuke, or DNN, is a content management system and application development platform. It is highly customizable and easy to use, regardless of coding knowledge and programming experience. It is an open source option, meaning the source code is available for people to use for free. DNN operates over 400,000 websites on the Internet today, making it one of the most popular options available to power a website on a Microsoft Windows server.

DotNetNuke Community Edition

The DNN Community Edition is the free edition of DotNetNuke. To begin using the software, simply register with the DNN website and download the appropriate files. To install them on a web server, upload them via FTP. This is the simplest way to get started using DotNetNuke. There are many extensions available to customize the community edition, similar to WordPress.

DotNetNuke Professional Edition

The DNN Professional Edition is an upgraded version of the Community Edition. It contains many features not available in the free version. This version costs $1,999 per year, per instance. If a person wants to use it on more than one website, he or she will have to pay the $1,999 fee for each website.

Features include:

  • Google Analytics Integration to make marketing easier.

  • Advanced Content Approval makes it easier to control content users submit to post on the website.

  • Site Health Monitor: Pings the website and lets the webmaster know of any issues that are present.

  • Site Vunerability Database: Keeps track of potentially dangerous security issues.

In order to download the Professional Edition, a form must be filled out and submitted. In response, users will receive an email containing a download link. The installation process is the same as the Community Edition.

DotNetNuke Marketplace

The DotNetNuke Marketplace is the place where people can purchase plug-ins and themes for their DotNetNuke website. Prices vary based on the product chosen. This portion of the site is very easy to navigate as people can narrow their selections down by version of DNN, or by type of content: Module, Skin, or Other.
