What is Phishing?

Have you ever been fooled by a phishing scheme? If you have, you’re not alone.

Crooks use phishing because it’s an effective means of gaining your private information. They do this by creating a spoof, or fake website that looks identical to popular bank, sales or other official sites. When you enter personal information into these fake sites your information doesn’t go to the website you intend. Instead, your private date is sent to the thief behind the site.

They use this information to break into your personal accounts, use your credit card number or other activities. Someone using this technique can gain access to your bank account or credit card information, and empty your account, or max our your credit cards before you even know your accounts have been compromised.

How Does Google Chrome Protect Me?

The developers of Google Chrome are using Google’s search technology to include safeguards that help protect you from phishing.Google’s spiders are continually crawling the web. As they do, they report back to Google with content, and quality information. During this process the Google spiders uncover many fake or phishing websites. Google is now sharing information about known phishing sites with users of Google Chrome. Through a public API, Google Chrome keeps itself updated with the most recent information on websites that may not be what they seem.

When you use Google Chrome to surf to one of these questionable websites, Google Chrome will display a warning. If you receive this warning, you should double check the website URL. Many times imitation sites are very close in URL to the original, but if you look carefully you’ll see the URLs are not exactly the same.

The best way to avoid being fooled by a phishing scam is to never enter personal information into a website if you didn’t actually type the link into your address bar.

You still have to be wary, but Google Chrome makes keeping your personal information safe just a little bit easier
