Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

Looking for a homemade formula for cleaning your walls? The walls in your home need a good cleaning every once in awhile. Smoke from cooking oils, splashes, splatters, and dirty handprints can all lead to grimy walls.

To clean the walls in your home naturally, all you need is a few basic household items you probably have on hand. Put the natural cleaning powers of vinegar and baking soda to work, and you’ll have clean walls in no time. One word of caution: always test your homemade cleaning solution on a small and inconspicuous area first.

In addition to these natural wall cleaning recipes, you will need at least two cleaning rags. One rag should be used to wipe the solution onto your walls and the other to dry. Always begin your wall cleaning at the bottom of the wall to avoid dirty drips.

Vinegar Wall Cleaning Solution

White vinegar can be used to clean most anything in your home, your walls being no exception. Use this vinegar and water solution for cleaning painted walls or wallpaper.

1/4 cup white vinegar

1 quart warm water

Combine vinegar and water in a bucket, wet a washcloth with the solution, and gently rub your walls clean. For spot cleaning, store the solution in a spray bottle and spray it directly on stubborn spots on your walls. Gently wipe clean with a rag or sponge.

Gentle Baking Soda Wall Scrub

Baking soda mixed with a little water makes a great all-purpose natural cleaning scrub. Use this solution when removing stubborn grime from your walls, such as in your kitchen. The scrub can be used safely on painted walls or on ceramic tile kitchen backsplashes.

1/4 cup baking soda

1 Tablespoon water, or to desired consistency

Combine baking soda and water in a shallow dish until a paste is formed. Use more or less water in the paste as desired. Gently scrub your walls clean with a rag. Follow with a separate clean, wet washcloth to wipe the scrub and dirt away.

Wall Cleaning Formula for Wood Paneling

Wood paneling requires special attention when it comes to cleaning. A little oil in your cleaning solution will help to protect your paneling and add a nice luster. Test the wall cleaning solution first in an inconspicuous area to be sure the solution will not affect the finish on your paneling. Do not saturate the wood with the solution, but use a barely damp cloth for cleaning.

1/4 cup olive oil

3 Tablespoons white vinegar

1 quart warm water

Mix the ingredients together in a small bucket. Use one cloth to apply the solution to the walls and another cloth to dry. Mix the ingredients together briefly each time before you wet the cloth.

Natural All-Purpose Cleaners

Many eco-friendly cleaning brands, such as Biokleen and Ecover, offer all-purpose liquid cleaning solutions that may be diluted for different uses. These petroleum-free cleaners are nice to have on hand for many cleaning tasks around the home. Depending on the amount of water you add to the cleaning concentrate, you can clean nearly every surface in your home including your walls.

Generally, just a tablespoon or two of concentrated all-purpose cleaner is required per quart of water to make a natural wall cleaning solution; however, check the label for reccommended diluting instructions.

You’ll be sure to find that a homemade formula for cleaning your walls does the job just right. With a little elbow grease, your walls should look as good as new in no time!
