A hand crocheted sweater set for a newborn is a priceless gift. This pattern is super easy and designed to fit newborns. If you need an unexpected gift for a baby shower, this entire set can be completed in a weekend or less. This pattern is great if you donate baby clothing to charities because it can be made smaller or larger simply by changing the size of the crochet hook and/or yarn.

What You’ll Need

  • Crochet hook size F
  • Crochet hook size E
  • 10 oz. baby sport yarn
  • Yarn needle
  • 5 buttons
  • 2 appliqué (optional)
  • Sewing needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors

Abbreviations

  • Ch=chain
  • Sc=single crochet
  • Hdc=half double crochet
  • Dc=double crochet
  • Sl st = slip stitch

Sweater Body

bottom

Use the F hook

Chain 91

Row 1: sc in second chain from hook and each chain across and turn (90 sc).

Row 2: chain 1, sc in stitch across and turn (90 sc).

Rows 3 - 15: repeat row 2. At the end of row 15, turn and begin right front.

Right Front

Row 16: chain 1, sc in next 22 stitches and turn.

Rows 17 - 27: repeat row 16, ending on wrong side and turn. Section measures about 3 inches.

Begin neck: slip stitch in next 7 stitches.

Row 28: sc in next 15 stitches and turn.

Row 29: chain 1, decrease over next two sc, sc in next 13 stitches and turn. (14 sc)

Row 30: chain 1, sc in next 12 stitches, decrease over last 2 sc and turn. (13 sc)

Row 31: chain 1, sc in next 13 sc and turn.

Rows 32 - 40 repeat row 31. At end of row 40, fasten off.

Back

Row 16: With right side facing you, join yarn in next sc off row 15, chain 1, sc in same stitch and each of next 46 stitches.

Rows 17 - 40: sc in each stitch across until even with right front shoulder. Fasten off.

Left Front

Row 16: With right side facing you, join yarn on row 15 and sc in last 22 sc.

Rows 17 - 27: sc in each stitch across, ending on wrong side and turn.

Begin left neck: slip stitch in next 7 stitches

Row 28: sc in next 15 stitches and turn.

Row 29: chain 1, decrease over next 2 sc, sc in next 13 stitches and turn.

Row 30: chain 1, sc in next 12 stitches, decrease over last 2 sc and turn.

Row 31: chain 1, sc in next 13 sc and turn.

Row 32 - 40: repeat row 31. At end of row 40, fasten off. Picture of entire back

Bottom Ribbing

Row 1: With right side facing you and using the E hook, join yarn in bottom right corner, (working in bottom of foundation chain) chain 2, hdc in each chain across. Turn (89 hdc)

Row 2: chain 2, hdc around post of next hdc from the back, hdc around front of next hdc post, repeat across to last stitch, hdc in last stitch and fasten off.

Sleeves

Using F hook-Chain 31

Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across and turn. (30 sc)

Row 2: chain 1, sc in next 30 stitches and turn.

Row 3 and 4: chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Row 5: chain 1, sc in each stitch across to last sc, 2 sc in last stitch and turn.(31 sc)

Row 6 - 8: chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Row 9: chain 1, sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last stitch and turn. (32 sc)

Rows 10 - 12: chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Row 13: chain 1, sc in each stitch across to last sc, 2 sc in last stitch and turn. (33 sc)

Rows 14 - 16: chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Row 17: chain 1, sc in each stitch across to last stitch, 2 sc in last stitch and turn. ( 34 sc)

Rows 18 - 22: chain 1 and sc in each stitch across. Fasten off at end of row 22.

Sleeve ribbing

With an E hook, join yarn on bottom right corner. You will be working on bottom of foundation chain.

Row 1: Chain 2, work 26 hdc across bottom of sleeve and turn.

Row 2: chain 2, hdc around back of next hdc post, hdc around front of next hdc post and repeat across to last stitch, hdc in last stitch and fasten off.

Repeat rows 1 - 22 and ribbing rows for second sleeve.

Neckband & Collar

Sew shoulder seams together.

With right side facing you, join yarn at right front neck edge.

Row 1: chain 2, hdc in 12 stitches to shoulder, hdc in 20 stitches across back, 13 hdc in stitches from left shoulder down left front of neck. And turn (46 hdc)

Row 2: chain 2, hdc around post of next stitch from the back, hdc around post of next hdc from front, repeat across to last stitch, hdc in last stitch.

Rows 3- 5: repeat row 2 and fasten off.

Button Band

Right side for boys and left side for girls.

Row 1: Using an E hook and right side facing you, join yarn at bottom, chain 1 and sc across evenly. Turn

Row 2: chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Rows 3 & 4: chain 1 and sc in each stitch across. Fasten off at end of row 4.

Buttonhole Band

Left for boys and right for girls.

Row 1. With E hook, join yarn at bottom, chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Row 2: chain 1, sc in each stitch across and turn.

Row 3: chain 1, sc in next 2 stitches, chain 2, skip 2 stitches, *sc in next 5 sc, chain 2, skip 2 stitches* repeat from * to * twice, sc in next 5, skip 2 stitches, sc in last 2 stitches and turn.

Row 4: chain 1, sc in each stitch and 2 sc in each chain 2 across. Fasten off.

attaching sleeve

Set in sleeves by placing right sides together and lining sleeve evenly to sleeve opening on sweater and slip stitching together. Fasten off.

Turn inside out and stitch side seams and sleeve seam closed with slip stitch through all thicknesses.

Mark locations for buttons and sew buttons in place with needle and thread.

Sew appliqué to top of left front with a needle and thread.

With f hook, chain 4 and slip stitch to form a circle.

Round 1: chain 2, 11 hdc in circle, join to top of chain 2.

Round 2: chain 2, hdc in same stitch, 2 hdc in each stitch around and join to top of chain 2.(24hdc)

Round 3: chain 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch, *hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch* repeat from * to * around and join to top of chain 2.(36 hdc)

Round 4: chain 2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 3, *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 3* repeat from * to * around and join with slip stitch to top of chain 2.

Round 5: chain 2, hdc in each stitch around and join to top of chain 2

Round 6: chain 1, sc in each stitch around and join to first sc.

Rounds 7-10: repeat round 6

Round 11: chain 2, *hdc around post (from back) of next sc from previous row, hdc around next post of previous row sc from front*, repeat from * to * around and join to top of chain 2.

Make pom pom if desired and attach to top of hat.

Sew appliqué if desired to front center of hat.

Booties

Sole:

Round 1: hdc in 3rd chain from hook and in next 7 chain, 7 hdc in last chain. Continue working around the other side of chain. Hdc in next 7 chains, 5 hdc in last chain and join to top of first hdc. (27 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 2, (counts as 1st stitch), hdc in same space, 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 6 st, dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in each of the next 5 stitches, dc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next 7 st,, 2 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, join with ss to front loop of the top of the beginning ch 2. (37 stitches)

Round 3: chain 1, working in back loops only, sc in each stitch around and join to first sc.

Begin Sides

Round 4: Chain 1, Sc in same space, sc in each of next 8 stitches, hdc in each of next 5 stitches dc in each of next 6 stitches, hdc in each of next 5 stitches, sc in last 12 stitches, join to first sc. (37 stitches)

Round 5: Chain 1, sc in same sp, sc in next 7 stitches, hdc in next 4, hdc 2 stitches together (5 times), hdc in next 4 stitches, sc in last 11 stitches and join to first sc.

Round 6: Chain 1, sc in same space, and in next 10 stitches, hdc in next 3 stitches, hdc 2 together (2 times), hdc in next 3 stitches, sc in last 11 stitches and join to first sc.

Round 7: chain 1, sc in next 10 stitches, turn toe inside out and slip stitch next 8 stitches together (4 total stitches), turn right side out, (you will begin stitches on opposite side of bootie), sc in last 10 stitches and join to first sc.

Round 7: chain 1, sc in each stitch around and join to first sc.

Rounds 8 - 11: repeat round 7 and join to first sc.

Round 12: chain 2, dc in each stitch around and join to top of chain 2.

Fold the double crochet row down , weave ribbon through and tie in a bow.

Repeat above steps for second bootie.
