Free Crochet Pattern and Directions for a Pineapple Motif Square
Pineapple motifs have been used for centuries to create a variety of items from decorative household items to clothing. Follow these few simple steps and you will be crocheting pineapple motifs with ease. By changing a traditional pineapple motif into a square with four pineapples, this free pattern for a crochet pineapple square can be used to create afghans, doilies, shawls or scarves just by using different size yarns, threads and hooks.

To make a cluster, yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over, draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Cluster made :)
Stitch Abbreviations
Sc = single crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc = double crochet
Sl st = slip stitch
Ch = chain
Round 1
Chain 1 and join with a slip stitch in first chain to form a ring.
Round 2
Ch 4, make 27 dc in ring. Join with sl st to top of ch 4.
Round 3
Ch 4, skip joining stitch “dc in next dc, ch 1.* Repeat from * to * around and join with sl st third ch of beginning ch 4.
Round 4
In first ch 1 space, sl st, ch 1 and sc. * ch 3, sc in next sp.* Repeat from * to * around, ending with ch 1 and hdc to first sc to make the last loop. (28 loops)
Round 5
Ch 3 and dc in same loop, *ch 5, skip next 2 loops, 9 dc in next loop, ch 5, skip next 2 loops, in next loop make a cluster {special stitches}, ch 3, cluster in next loop.* Repeat from * to * around, ending with ch 3. Join with sl st to top of first dc.

Round 7
Ch 3, dc in joining. *Ch 5, (sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3) 7 times. Sc in next sp, ch 5, cluster in top of next cluster, ch 7 for corner loop, cluster in top of next cluster.* Repeat from * to * around ending with ch7. Join with sl st.
Round 8
Ch 3, dc in joining, ch 5, *(sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 3) 6 times, sc in next loop, ch 5, cluster in top of next cluster, ch 5, in next corner loop make (2 dc, ch 5 and 2 dc), ch 5, cluster in top of next cluster.* Repeat from * to * around ending with 2 dc, ch 5 and 2 dc in last loop, chain 5. Join with sl st.

Slip stitch in first loop. In loop ch 1 and 5 sc, *sc in top of “pineapple”, 5 sc in next loop, sc in top of cluster, 3 sc in next loop, sc in each of next 4 dc, 4 sc in next loop, sc in each of next 2 dc, in corner loop make 2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc, 2 sc in next 2 dc, 3 sc in next loop, sc in next 4 dc, 3 sc in next loop, sc in top of cluster, 5 sc in next loop.* Repeat around and end with sl st in beginning sc. Cut yarn and weave ends in.

Tips & Patterns

Sports yarn (22 oz) and a size E hook will create approximately a 10 x 10 inch square.
Worsted weight yarn (40 oz) and a size G hook will create approximately a 12 x 12 inch square
Number 10 crochet thread and a size 4 hook will create approximately an 6 x 6 inch square.
Number 5 crochet thread and a size 5 hook will create approximately an 8 x 8 in square.
To make an afghan- 4 rows of 6 (12x12) motifs (24 total)
5 rows of 7 (10x10) (35 total)
To make a square 12 inch by 12 inch doilies ( 2 rows of 6 x 6 motifs) (total of 4).
Combine different amounts of motifs together to create longer or wider afghans and/or doilies.
