The Programs for Military Tuition Assistance

Armed Forces Tuition Assistance (TA): Congress has allowed each branch of the military to assist eligible members of the military who are in the Army, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard. The program pays 100%, or not to exceed $250 per semester credit hour or $166 per quarter credit hour. Qualifying members of the Air Force receive $187.50 per semester hour or $3500 for the full year.

Some branches of the military will only qualify active duty only, while others will accept both active duty and reserve personnel. It is best to check with the specific branch for information.

Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB): The Department of Veterans Affairs provide military tuition assistance program to personnel in various programs such as:

-Active duty (The GI Bill provides up to 36 months of benefits toward a participating online degree program.)

-Selected reserves (This program provides reserve branches of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army National Guard and Air National Guard tuition assistance under the GI Bill.)

-Post 9/11( Accredited Institutions of Higher Learning universities will provide up to the maximum in-state tuition and fees, along with its provision of the Yellow Ribbon Program. The institution may waive up to 50% and the VA matches the institution’s amount.)

-Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)

-Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA) (This program is for eligible dependents of veterans who have died as a result of service related conditions or died in active duty, and also dependents of disabled veterans.)

The Montgomery GI Bill will provide military assistance to regionally or nationally accredited Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) online universities participating in this government program.

Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES): This most comprehensive resource for military tuition assistance for personnel and family members of the armed forces is available at most Dante’s supported regionally accredited universities offering online degrees.
