Saybrook Graduate School Offers a Different Prospective on Online Learning

These days more and more people are earning a graduate degree after their bachelor’s degree. As more college educated people vie for the same jobs, earning a master’s or doctorate degree becomes important just to stand out from the competition. Earning that degree from a reputable distance learning graduate program can help you stand out. Saybrook Graduate School offers a curriculum much different from other schools. Saybrook offers distance learning degrees with a humanistic theme.

Saybrook Graduate School was founded in the early 1970’s by a group of psychologists specializing in humanistic psychology, which focuses on the human condition of psychology. Dr. Rollo May, most known for his theories in existential psychology, was one of the co-founders. Saybrook is located in San Francisco, CA.

Saybrook is regionally accredited by the Senior Colleges and Universities Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The school offers master’s degrees and doctorate degrees in the following programs: Psychology, Organizational Systems, Human Science and Mind-Body Medicine. Students can select concentrations in Consciousness and Spirituality, Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology, Integrative Health Studies and Organizational Systems. These concentrations can be added to any degree program.

The school also offers the Doctorate of Psychology degree, or the PsyD. This program may allow the student to pursue licensure as a psychologist in some states. The program is not accredited by the American Psychological Association. Remember to check your state licensure requirements.

Saybrook’s learning format is different from other online learning programs. Classes can be taken online, by independent study or as a one-on-one mentored class. Students keep in contact with faculty and other students via e-mail and phone. In addition to courses, Saybrook’s distance learning program requires Residency Conferences. Conferences are 5 days long and take place in San Francisco. Students meet with other students and faculty for workshops, lectures and socializing. There are 2 conferences required each year. One takes place in January and the other in June. New students are accepted in September and March and must attend an Orientation Conference.

Since students learn at their own pace, time to degree completion may be different for everyone. The online master’s degree programs can be completed in 2 years. Doctorate programs can be completed in 4-5 years if the student has a master’s degree already. Students pursuing a doctorate degree must have earned a master’s degree first.

The cost for Saybrook Graduate School depends on the program the student is pursuing. The tuition for most master’s and doctorate programs is $18,900 per year. The PsyD costs $22,000 per year. The tuition for the master’s in Systems Counseling is $11,400 per semester and the master’s in Leadership and Development is $9,880 per semester. These costs do not include books or the room and board or travel for the Residential Conferences. Saybrook does accept federal financial aid.

The admission criteria for Saybrook includes transcripts, an application along with a $50 application fee, letters of recommendation and test scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) if applicable. The only program that requires GRE scores is the PsyD program.

If you enjoy something a little out of the ordinary but still desire a distance learning degree, Saybrook Graduate School should be on your list of schools to check out. While it may not be your typical distance learning graduate program, it is a reputable school with a solid reputation in humanistic psychology.
