List of Colleges that Offer Zoology as a Major
Zoology is a broad major that offers courses in everything from evolutionary biology to wildlife management. Zoology students go on to work in labs, research, with veterinarians, and in zoos, among other places. This list of five colleges that offer Bachelor degrees in zoology is not comprehensive, but it gives an overview of a few of dozens of colleges around the country that offer zoology majors.
North Dakota State University
North Dakota State University is located in Fargo, North Dakota. It has about 11,000 undergraduate students. Zoology majors must take 42 credits of biological science, and 22-36 hours in statistics, math, physics, chemistry, in addition to other core classes.
Western New Mexico State University
Around 2,360 undergraduate students walk the halls of Western New Mexico State University in Silver City, New Mexico. One hundred twenty-eight credit hours are required to graduate from its zoology program, including 30 hours of zoology courses (such as Comparative Physiology and Mammology), and 23 hours of core life science classes (like Cell Biology and Genetics).
Northern Michigan University
Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan has about 8,600 undergraduate students, and its zoology major requires 124 credit hours to graduate. Forty-four hours must be completed in zoology, and an additional 28 hours of required courses in Chemistry and Physics are part of the zoology degree plan as well.
Oregon State University
Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon has around 15,800 undergrads, and it ranks number four in the nation for zoology majors. Undergraduate students must complete 180 hours of study to earn their zoology Bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University. Sample courses included in the degree plan include Aquatic Entomology, Comparative Anatomy, and Insect Physiology.
Texas A&M University
Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas boasts around 38,400 undergraduate students. Zoology majors must complete 120 hours of study to earn their Bachelor’s degrees. Students can take courses in Developmental Biology, Physiology and Neuroscience, Ecology and Evolution, and Pre-Veterinary studies.
Make your own list of colleges that offer zoology as a major based on factors that are important to you, such as strength of the department, opportunities to conduct undergraduate research, and region of the country in which the college is located. Talk to other students who have attended the college to study zoology to see how they feel about the education they received there. Ensure that the college you choose has a strong career center that provides ample resources to its students before and after graduation to find a job that suits their interests and abilities as well. Visit the campus of a few colleges that offer zoology, and talk with professors, if possible. Email professors and college admissions staff with questions you have about the program.
