Pointers when Looking for College Scholarships from the States of Maryland to North Dakota

A number of states and their universities and colleges have an abundance of grants, scholarship and other financial assistance programs for college bound high school graduates.

If in case you do not find the university or college of your choice, it may be for the following reasons:

Your home college or university offer scholarships based on academic merits or excellence only.
The college scholarships based on financial needs available for low-income families are the Federal Grants and State Funded grants. This means, your FAFSA will determine your qualification without need for separate application for the grants.
Your choice of university or college automatically considers your admission application for financial assistance by evaluating the results of your FAFSA application. In addition, the availability of scholarships funded by the institution or private donors will be distributed to applicants who have the most financial need.
The university or college website requires the researcher to log-in with a FAFSA PIN.
The Financial Aid Office of the university or college prefers to provide financial aid information through direct consultation with the office during the process of evaluation.

Alpha Sigma Lambda, Tau Chapter, Scholarship which has a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7 at UMUC as its main requirement.
Patricia Currey Scholarship offered to UMUC students majoring in Psychology specializing in Clinical Science but those with demonstrated financial need will have first preference.

ALLEGANY COLLEGE OF MARYLAND

Allegany College of Maryland Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Catalog- Do explore this page thoroughly since the list is quite extensive and varied. Nevertheless, you will find that scholarships are classified according to their deadlines for the 2010-2011 school year.

Below are some examples of scholarships awarded based on financial need:

Allegany Soil Conservation District Martin Gordon Memorial Scholarship continuation of assistance scholarship is possible if criteria is continuously met. Students should submit an essay on why financial aid is needed and should be enrolled in a forestry curriculum with 2.0 GPA and must have attended Allegany County high school.
Bharton Rhoda Bharton Memorial Nursing Scholarship- is available to residents of Allegany County, Maryland, Bedford County or Pennsylvania; must need financial assistance with 3.0 GPA and enrolled in nursing curriculum. Applicants should submit an essay about why they need financial assistance.
Derrick Memorial Nursing Scholarship for residents of LaVale or Cumberland, with at least 3.5 GPA and enrolled in a nursing curriculum. Applicants should submit essay on why financial assistance is needed.

The university however, has put a cap either on the amount of scholarship or the number of scholarships coming from private institution, as a means to give equal opportunity for all incoming students. Nonetheless, there is no limit observed pertaining to federally assisted scholarship grants.

ANNE ARUNDEL COMMUNITY COLLEGE (AACC)

AACC’s List of Scholarships: This educational institution in particular encourages everyone to explore the list since not all are merit based and many of them remain un-awarded during the school year. However, interested applicants have to wait until they are given access to MYAACC where applications are finally processed

Institutional Scholarship Application- There are about 140 different college scholarships wherein not all are merit based and eligibility requirements are flexible . Scholarship assistance ranges from $50 to $3,000 per year Nevertheless, preliminary applications can be submitted on May 1 for fall and November 1 for spring scholarships.
Kathy and Jerry Wood Scholarship- AACC guarantees awarding of this scholarship to at least one applicant to graduates of Anne Arundel County Public High School before 2006 who demonstrate financial need. There is no need for a Federal Pell Grant but you should be enrolled full-time at AACC under a degree or certificate program and should have a high school GPA of 2.5. Awards given are $1,500 per term for a maximum four term period.

CARROLL COMMUNITY COLLEGE (CAROLLCC)

CARROLCC’s List of Foundation Scholarships for All Students – a combined list for both need and merit-based scholarships, which includes the following as examples of college scholarships applicants in need of financial help:

Caroline Babylon and Kevin Dayhoff Scholarship $1,000 for one recipient
Burrier Family Scholaship $500 for 2 recipients
Junior Women’s Club of Westminster Scholarship $300 for one female recipient

Applicants may be enrolled in any degree or certificate program but Carroll County residency is required and should submit a completed FAFSA to demonstrate need.

Dwight Dingle Memorial Fund 1 recipient (no GPA required)
Susquehana Bank Scholarships $1,000 each for 2 recipients
Pepsi Bottling Group Scholarship $1,250 for four recipients and CC residency is not required.

The applicant can be enrolled in any degree program but with at least 2.00 GPA and enrolled full time. Also, FAFSA submission is required to determine the applicant’s need while Carroll County residency is preferred.

THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF BALTIMORE COUNTY (CCBC)

CCBC provide scholarship funds to help students defray the costs of tuition and fees, room and board, books, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses and are awarded primarily on the basis of need, and in the order of application. Interested applicants have to apply for a CCBC Online Information System account in order to view the available scholarships.

CECIL COLLEGE

Below are some examples of CC’s lists of available need-based college scholarships and are categorized per department:

Madeline Newman Endowed Scholarship- this scholarship lists down RN or LPN students enrolled in the CNA nursing program with at least 2.0 GPA. There is no specific requirement as to residency but FAFSA should be submitted as a demonstration of financial need.
Perryville Chamber of Commerce Scholarship- there is no particular program required but is offered to seniors or graduates of Perryville High School and should be a resident of Cecil County. GPA should be at least 2.0 and must submit a FAFSA form.
Senator William Amoss Memorial Endowed Scholarship- applicants should be enrolled for at least 3 or more credits and maintain a GPA of 2.0 with no particular program requirement. Open to residents of Cecil County and FAFSA submission is required.

FREDERICK COMMUNITY COLLEGE (FCC)

Frederick Singles Scholarship is open to high school seniors of Frederick County high school and someone who is dependent on a single parent. Attendance at FCC for college enrollment should be immediately after graduating from high school. Interested applicants should get in touch with their high school guidance counselor to obtain more information since their respective guidance counselors will do the nominating to FCC; deadline is April 15, 2010.

HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE (HCC)

Howard Community College Educational Foundation, Inc. Need-basis scholarship selections will be determined by the Financial Aid Scholarship Committee (FASC); a requirements vary. Examples of scholarhips are:

Alumni & Friends Endowment- of the student’s parents or guardian is an alumni of HCC and students should have at least 3.0 GPA.
Colosseum Gym and Fitness Endowment Fund- open to students enrolled in fitness related courses with a 2.5 minimum GPA. The FASC will determine amount of need based on the FAFSA application.
L. Todd Allen Human Resources Management Scholarship - requires a written two-page essay about the applicant’s interest in Human Resource Management and its related courses. Deadline for submission is on Aug. 15th and awards, if granted, are used for tuition in the Fall or Spring semesters. Students should maintain 2.0 GPA.
Ellen M. Cherry-Delawder Memorial Endowment- is offered to a woman with dependent children. Student should preferably be enrolled in a business course or a related field of study, as well as maintain a minimum of a 2.00 GPA.

STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS

Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (MDHE)

State-funded Financial Aid Programs providing college scholarship based on financial needs in the State of Massachusetts:

The Massachusetts Gilbert Matching Student Grant Program (GMSGP) need-based assistance extended to nursing students of any Massachusetts’ School of Nursing programs who will use 100% of the scholarship funds to attend or continue their nursing studies.

The Cash Grant Program- offered to needy students to be used by way of Tuition Waiver Program in order to qualify for other campus-based financial aid.

The Massachusetts Educational Rewards Grant Program- this grant is offered to the dislocated or incumbent low income workers interested in upgrading their skills in order to find jobs where there are higher demands. This grant can be used by the recipient to cover living expenses up to at least 30% of the free-money awarded.

UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS SYSTEM (UMass)

Acushnet Foundation Scholarship- $500 for 4 recipients; open to students from the New Bedford area and FASA submissions are the only requirements.
Alumni Association Scholarship- $1,500 available to one Medical student attending UMass Medical School. Required submissions include FAFSA, W-2 of both student and parent, CSS Profile and Federal Income Tax Return.

STATE OF MICHIGAN

The State of Michigan has a number of Financial Aid Programs under the Paying for College Student Financial Aid Website. Here are two need based grants extended to students:

The Michigan Competitive Scholarship administered by participating public and independent educational institutions and are granted based on merit and financial need for use as payment of tuition fees in any degree granting program.

The Tuition Incentive Program is open to students who graduate from high school or who completes GED before the age of 20; this high-school completion incentive will provide for the student’s first 2 years in college.

FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY (FSU)

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY (WSU)

WSU’s Private Scholarship List contain mostly college scholarships that are need- based :

Ralph and Grace Ainsworth Scholarship- Students should be enrolled full-time, must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.
Dennis W. Archer Foundation Scholarship- as much as $5,000 is awarded but limited to residents of Detroit City or graduate students of Cassopolis High School who are enrolled in any degree-granting program aside from showing financial need.
Howard Baker Foundation General Scholarship is open to full-time (12 credit hours maximum) students. Tuition for two semesters is limited to undergraduate students at Wayne State University who are residents of the city of Detroit and who have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA.

WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (WMU)

WMU’s Private Foundation and Association Scholarships include the following:

American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE)- this scholarship is open to a freshman with 2.5 GPA overall and a 3.0 GPA in math and sciences. The goal for your college plans should be to major in engineering, mathematics, computer or the physical sciences. Students should demonstrate financial need and be a member of an under-represented minority group in the sciences and technology.
Berrien Community Foundation Dunn Scholarship- this is open to a woman who is returning to college after a divorce or after raising children or who has become a widow and plans to make changes in her life. She must have a 2.75 or better GPA.
Perry, John W. Fund - The DRCNet Foundation in coordination with Students for Sensible Drug Policy, is providing scholarships through this fund to students who lost their federal financial aid due drug convictions.

STATE OF MINNESOTA

State Funded Grants to aid Minnesota - for residents intending to enroll in Minnesota’s universities and colleges.

Minnesota Achieve Scholarship -open to Minnesota high school students with a goal of pursuing a 4-year degree and will be awarded with a one-time scholarship to pay for the entire college education in any public or private university in Minnesota.
Minnesota Postsecondary Child Care Grant- provides help to low income students with children to continue with their pursuit of a college degree, to have the means to pay for child care.

CENTRAL LAKES COLLEGES (CLC)

CLC Foundation’s List of Private Scholarships
Marine Corps Scholarship for those who are in pursuit of a college education and are sons and daughters of current of ex-US Marines or US Navy Corpsmen.
MN Sheriff’s Association Scholarship Program provides financial aid to students who are in pursuit of careers in law enforcement and have demonstrated financial need.
PEO- Philanthropy in Education Organization for Women extends grants to women who have been out of school for 24 months but used to be enrolled in an academic or technical education program. Financial need is a consideration.

INVER HILLS COMMUNITY COLLEGES (IHCC)

IHCC List of Foundation Scholarships

Bruce Dayton Scholarship- $500 is available in the Fall and Spring Semesters for a student enrolled in the Chinese Studies Program who demonstrated academic excellence and clear career goals; special consideration will be given to those who have financial need.

Building Brighter Futures Scholarship- $500 is available for Fall and Spring Semesters for students who manifest academic achievements and clear career goals but will have special consideration for financial need.

MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MANKATO (MSUM)

MSUM- Alliss, Dempsey and University Scholarships

Alliss Scholarships are annual gifts from the Charles and Ellora Alliss Foundation to the Minnesota State College and University System. These are offered to Minnesota residents who demonstrate financial need. Students should submit their FAFSA before Mid-March.

Dempsey Scholarships are financed and administered by the Minnesota State University, Mankato Foundation. These scholarships are usually awarded to students who are not eligible for other sources of grants and scholarships. Students should submit their FAFSA prior to Mid-March.

University Scholarships are funded by the University Bookstore and other private donors. Likewise, students should submit their FAFSA prior to Mid-March.

STATE OF NEBRASKA

Nebraska’s State Opportunity Grant which was formerly known as The Nebraska State Grant, is open to Nebraskan residents enrolled in Nebraska’s educational institutions and who are eligible for a Pell Grant. Scholarships are awarded through postsecondary institutions within the state; hence, students must first apply to the school to be considered for the grant

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA LINCOLN (UNL)

UNL’s Tuition Assistance Program is provided under the “Collegebound Nebraska Tuition Assistance program for which Nebraska students are guaranteed total grant assistance which may equal or exceed the full cost of tuition provided they complete the FAFSA and eligible for PELL Grants. Nonetheless, those who are not Pell Grant eligible may still qualify for assistance if they belong to a family of four with one student attending college and an income of $45,000 or less. STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

New Hampshire Leveraged Incentive Grant Program

This state funded grant assistance is provided on the basis of both merit and need to a full-time undergraduate NH student at any participating NH accredited institution. The student must be a NH resident who can demonstrate financial need based on FAFSA and merit is determined by the institution. This is open to a sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate student.

STATE OF NEVADA

The State of Nevada’s Scholarships and Grants- These are state funded grants offered through the Nevada State College system and the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education for college scholarships based on financial need.

The Nevada State Access Grant and the Nevada Grant-In-Aid are offered to college-bound Nevada residents who can demonstrate dire financial need.
The Out-of-State Grant-In-Aid program is similar to the State Access Grant and Grants-In-Aid but extended to non-residents students who wish to enroll within the state.
Regents Award Program is offered to disadvantaged students to provide them with the opportunity to secure work in community service jobs and attend school at the same time. The following are eligible: single parent; 22 or older and with dire financial need due to lack of social, cultural or familial support and those with history of educational displacement are considered.
