iTunes 64-bit Edition

With the emergence of 64-bit computer processors, many well-known programs are now available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The 64-bit versions are geared for the faster capacity of the processor, as well as the complimentary components that may come with a motherboard, hard drive, or RAM memory.

For users of iTunes and Windows 7 64-bit operating system, there is a 64-bit edition of iTunes that can now be downloaded for their computers. In this article, learn where to find iTunes 64, how to install it, and what you should do if you run into problems.

iTunes Windows 7 64-bit Edition

There is new version of iTunes for both the 32-bit and 64-bit of Windows 7, which can be found on the main website for the program. The new version of the program, as of this writing, is 10.0.1.

On the left hand side, above the big blue ‘download’ button, are four different options. The first is whether you would like to download iTunes for the 32-bit versions of either Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7; the second option is if you want to download the program for the 62-bit versions of either XP, Vista, or Windows 7. This is the option you will want to choose if using a 64-bit computer.

Depending on if you chose to run or save, the download will be complete. In either case, Windows 7 will ask if you want to install the program. Hit OK and iTunes will start installing. Half-way through the installation, Windows 7 may again ask if you want this program to install (this is most likely for iTunes itself, as the download is for both Quicktime & iTunes), again say yes and the install will start again.

If everything goes right, both iTunes and Quicktime will be installed on your computer. You will then be able to set up the program.

Troubleshooting iTunes on Window 7 64-bit

Of course, sometimes things don’t always go so well and you may have issues with iTunes and Windows 7.

  • iTunes won’t download - If you’re using Internet Explorer 8, which comes standard with Windows 7, you may find that even when clicking download on the iTunes website, your download doesn’t start. IE8 automatically blocks downloads as a spam/virus protection. On the page, at the top of the website, you will see a yellow bar that will tell you that IE has blocked a download for your protection. Right click on the bar and select the first option of ‘download file’ and iTunes will start its download.
  • iTunes won’t install - When following the steps above, iTunes downloads, but then won’t install. There are a few ways around this. In Windows 7, right click on the iTunes.exe and then select ‘run as administrator’. This should start the install process.
  • iTunes won’t open - After installing iTunes, you may find that it is not showing the normal program agreement right away. Wait a few moments, as previous versions (like 8 or 9) may be a bit slow in loading. If it doesn’t open, try to install it again.
  • iTunes not installed - When the installation has finished, you may notice that only Quicktime seems to have installed on your computer. This may happen if you don’t OK the second Windows 7 install question, usually if you left the program to install in the background or you walked away for the moment. The easiest way is to just run the installer again; this will now show the option of just installing iTunes.

While the 64-bit edition of iTunes is the same as the 32-bit in features, you will be able to utilize the program’s 64-bit capabilities, as well as ensuring you receive the correct support for your system.
