Installation Error with the MSI File
When you double-click the Office installation file with the extension .msi, you may receive the error messages:
MSI_package_name cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group,” or the message:
“MSI Error 41
Contact your administrator or product vendor for assistance.”
This is a common installation error that may occur whether you are installing the whole suite or a standalone program. You may be confused by the “.msi” file, which is not the real installation file. For solving this issue, find the “Setup.exe” file, which will be located in the root folder of the installation source. Once you run the executable file, the program should be able to install without any further trouble.
Receive Random Error Messages when Installing or Opening an Office Program
When installing the program, you may receive an error at the end of the setup procedure:
“Error 1401: Setup cannot create Registry Key,”
“Error 1402: Setup cannot open Registry Key,”
“Error 1406: Setup cannot write the value to the registry key,”
“The error message that you receive lists the registry subkey that is causing the error to occur.”
If you haven’t received any of these messages, but have received the following error, you need to fix it manually: “Microsoft program has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application,” (instead of program, you will see the actual Office program name, such as Word or Excel).
To fix these errors, log onto the computer using the Administrator account, and open the Windows Explorer. Click “Folder and Search Options” from the “Organize” menu, and click “View.”
Click “Show hidden files, folders, and drives,” under the tab “Hidden files and folders.” Make sure you clear the check boxes “Hide extensions for known file types,” and “Hide protected operating system file (Recommended). Now click “OK,” and select “Yes” on the “Warning” dialog box.
Navigate to the folder: “C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Office\Data\.” Right-click the file “Opa12.dat” and select the “Properties” option. From the new dialog box on the screen, navigate to the tab “Security” > “Advanced” > “Permissions,” and select “Everyone” in the list of “Permission entries.” Then click “Edit” and select the “Full Control” check box. Now you will have to click “OK” four times, after which the errors should be removed.
If the above mentioned method doesn’t work, remove the “Opa12.dat” file from the folder “C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Office\Data.”
The Dichotomy of 64-bit and 32-bit Office Products
During installation of certain Office 2010 Professional products, you may receive the error message, “You cannot install the 64-bit version of Office 2010 because you have 32-bit Office products installed.” This happens because of incompatibility between the two version of Office products on the same computer. For instance, if you install the Office Professional 2010 32-bit version, and try to install the 64-bit version of Project Professional 2010, you will receive this particular error. When you receive this error, note down all the names of the products listed on the error message screen. Then click the “Start” menu button, and go to “Control Panel.” Click “Uninstall a Program” under “Programs.” Find the first product you had noted down from the error message, right-click on it, and select “Uninstall.” Follow this procedure to uninstall all the programs you had found on the error message list. Once you have removed the previous versions, the new versions should be able to install easily.
When you install your copy of Office Professional 2010 on your Windows 7 computer, you are required to activate your product. The process of activation is pretty much software based and doesn’t require any external tool. You are basically provided with a 25-character product key divided into groups of 5. This key, also known as serial number is located either on an orange/yellow sticker on the back of the Office CD case, or has arrived to your email inbox if you have purchased Office online.
Sometimes it happens that you try activating the product with the provided license key, but it still continues to show you a red bar saying “Product Activation Failed.” In that case, go to “Start” > “Control Panel” > “Programs” > “Programs and Features.” From the list of programs, right-click “Office 2010,” and click “Change” (do not click “Uninstall). Now a dialog box will appear on the screen within a minute, asking you to enter the key. Type in the correct product key again. This time, the software should be able to run fine after activation.
