Install AVI Codec for WMP and Play AVI Videos in Windows Media Player
Find, Download, Install and Use AVI Codecs for WMP
AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) is a multimedia container format which is used for video files. It is one of the most popular video formats which is widely used for movies and videos.
In this tutorial, I will explain how you can play AVI files in Windows Media Player after finding, downloading and installing AVI codecs for WMP.
AVI is just a multimedia container, most AVI videos are generally encoded using the DivX or the XviD codec. To play AVI fles encoded using the DIvX or the XviD codecs, you just need to install those AVI codecs and you can then play AVI files in Windows Media Player.
There is one more way to play AVI (XviD, DivX) and every other video file in Windows Media Player. You could install a video codec pack, like the K-lite codec pack or the Ace Mega codec pack, which installs the codecs required to play any video file on WMP.
Download DivX AVI Codec for WMP
You can download the DivX AVI codec pack for Windows. The package includes the DivX player as well as the DivX codec which allows you to watch AVI files on WMP.
<strong>Download DivX Plus Codec Pack</strong>
Just download the DivX codec pack and install it. After the installation is complete, you can view DivX encoded AVI files either in the DivX player or Windows Media Player.
Download XviD AVI Codec for WMP
Similarly, you can download the XviD AVI codecs for Windows. XviD is an open source codec which is widely used for encoding video files.

Install the XviD codecs let’s you view XviD encoded AVI files in any video player, including Windows Media Player.
Download K-Lite Codec Pack for WMP
To view videos, you can either download codecs for each format individually or download all codecs together and install them all at once. After you install the K-lite codec pack, you will be able to run and view almost every video format on Windows Media Player or the video player of your choice.
This includes AVI, DivX, XviD, MKV, H.264 or any other container/codec combination you might have heard of.
Just <strong>Download K-lite Mega Codec Pack</strong> and install it. Choose the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, if you can. If you want a smaller download size, go with K-Lite Codec Pack Basic.
Playing AVI videos in Windows Media Player
Once you have installed the required codecs (or better yet, a mega codec pack), you don’t need to do anything else. Just browse to the AVI movie you wanted to watch, and open it in Windows Media Player.
It will start playing directly. I would recommend using the 3rd codec pack, the K-Lite Codec Pack, so that you don’t have to worry about installing any other codecs.
