Quick Take

The PC security market has many competitors and seemingly innumerable choices. Every year a new release comes out, with new products and combinations of features offered as well. How does TrustPort PC Security measure up to the competition? Let’s find out.

Introduction

TrustPort PC Security is the security suite from TrustPort which adds additional protection and features to their Antivirus product. Encryption features, digital signatures, and shredding of digital data are the key additions to the suite. TrustPort PC Security runs on Windows 2000 or later, although the company does not list Windows 7 compatibility yet. I did not have time to confirm or deny Windows 7 compatibility.

Features (4 out of 5)

TrustPort PC Security has the expected feature set, including anti-virus and anti-spyware, personal firewall, spam prevention, phishing protection, as well as encryption features and data shredding. I was interested in the inclusion of the eSign module as part of the package. A tool for digital signatures, management of keys and certificates is a logical inclusion and an important security tool. Tools for encrypting archives as well as entire disks are included as well. These components all deal well with systems security and not simply network, Internet, and anti-malware concerns. The eSign module includes support for Alladin eToken Pro tokens, Rainbow, Eutron, ActivCard, Spyrus, and command line support of encryption and digital signatures.

Install and Ease of Use (4 out of 5)

The download was 145MB. The installation was one of the most straightforward I have seen. I especially appreciated the display of all modules with check boxes as options rather than being forced to enter a custom setup path just to see what components were going to be installed. Providing options by default for the install directories was a nice touch as well, although unneeded for the most novice users. Likewise advanced users will enjoy the option to change the anti virus engine configuration. Three anti virus engines are built in and configured to cascade and can be enabled or disabled for use.

The program interface is clean, well laid out, and explanatory. The wizard walked me through creation of an encrypted image drive to be automatically mounted at startup effortlessly. The GUI was clean, modern, and easy to navigate.

Price (5 out of 5)

TrustPort offers the single user license including shipping of CD/DVD media for $27.94 US. License packs for home & small business users are available for up to 5 computers, and multiple licenses for 10 or more computers for up to two years are available for businesses. International resellers are available for business licensing arrangements.

Overall (4 out of 5)

TrustPort PC Security has some great and innovative features at an excellent price. TrustPort is based in the Czech Republic. We are seeing many emerging technology companies in eastern Europe. I had not used any ofTrustPort’s offerings before, but with this first try they have impressed me with a comprehensive, straightforward, easy to use personal PC security product.
